I've been keeping my PS3 at OFW 3.55 because I've always intended to hack it. A problem playing BluRay discs may push me to do it.

Currently, older BDs play ok, but if I try to play newer BDs (eg. "MoneyBall"), I get a message:

"The system software of your PS3 system is version 3.55. To start, you must update to version 3.70 or later. Do you want to update now?"

Can someone explain to me what the issue is? What are my options at this point? (aside from upgrading to 3.70, which will surely stop any possibility of hacking)

The game requires higher firmware to play, thats what it means :P
You cant play all games on 3.55 custom firmware

If you want to play the latest games and still have a jailbroken console then best thing to do is buy another ps3 for latest games/online play, use the 3.55 for backups, homebrew etc

Its that cinavia protection bull****...

go ahead and jailbreak your ps3 and install Disable Cinavia by the Rebug team

Moneyball will work fine after that, and its a great movie...

It's been at least 1.5 years since I looked at jailbreaking. It looks like there's a lot of options, but which ones will allow me to completely wipe it back to OFW if I need to? The ones with the least risk, I mean.

Definitely KMEAW CFW...

You are already on 3.55 official firmware right?

If so all you need to do is download KMEAW and install it via recovery mode

Id recommend using MultiMan over Gaia for a backup manager

Just so you know if you install CFW 355 with the rebug.me 4.0 spoof for CFW 355 ,i remember i talked to somebody a while back in a thread & he said the spoof works to get past BD movies disc message ,but obviously not not games ..You might want to try that .Also it is not cinavia, that will mute the volume on any movie with that protection .It will not stop you from playing the disc ,nor installing cinavia pkg will help you either with your problem .disable cinavia pkg will only help you with movies that have been ripped & still have the cinavia protection in the audio the ps3 will detect the audio stream it then mute the audio !

KMEAW cfw doesnt require any dongle... jst install the .PUP and you're PS3 will be jailbroken

installing the 4.0 spoofer that Zombie mentioned is easy too once your jailbroken

EDIT - and rolling back to OFW is just as simple... you do this by installing 3.55 OFW and boom your back to normal

Do as @Adamsville said ,just do not install firmware past OFW 355 you will not be able to go back .So make sure you do not screw up...After you install CFW 355 the stand alone 4.0 spoof & activate it you should be able to play the BD disc without the message telling you to update your firmware ..

Btw, the only other thing I really need my PS3 to do is play MKVs. Is there a codec pack or something ?
