questions about mfw on phat with no bdrom.
Couldn't find an answer by searching, so thought I'm posting.
I have a phat with no bdrom. In order to update it I created a mfw with the latest mfw builder, ofw 3.55, and removed the blu-ray stuff. The update went fine, but now I'm not seeing the "Install Package Files" option under Games. What do I need to do to get this? Is it a bad idea to take a cfw, and run it through mfw builder to remove the blu-ray stuff? |

Well, OFW3.55 doesn't have 'install packages'. You will need to modify a cfw. I'm sure theres a workaround that's been posted on here?

Thanks for the info guys. I was a bit nervous to try a CFW in MFW Builder, but I will give it a try tonight.
I noticed something weird about updating a MFW with the blu-ray patches. Every time I update I get the blue screen which says my settings are corrupt, and need reset. When I try to reset them through recovery menu it doesn't work, just keeps sending me to that blue screen. The solution I found was to wipe the partition table of the disk on a computer. Once I do that it goes through the initial disk formatting, and everything boots fine. It's really weird, because for a split second before the blue screen comes up I can see the initial configuration options where you choose a language. I tried swapping hdds in, and out.. One of the disks I had was in this unit when I had a failed FW upgrade (because of the non-existent bdrom). When I put this disk in (after upgrading to MFW 3.55) it actually tried to continue updating to 3.41 even though I was already on 3.55. I believe it failed right where it starts looking for the bdrom to update firmware. Kind of surprised I didn't end up bricking. I bet it would've if the 3.41 upgrade actually finished. So I guess that says the hdd keeps some record of the firmware update status? Once I get a NAND flasher I might experiment with this a bit more on a unit I have with a good bdrom. |

I cloned the git repository because I was having an issue where all my firmwares without the sprx patches were coming out to being like 5 megs in size.
Turns out they added the option "Add new icons in XMB". I believe this is how to get the install packages menu. Even though I was on MFW Builder 0.2.1, and checked out 0.2.1 the version I checked out today was different. Going to try this again with an OFW. It really makes me nervous to try to run a CFW through it, as the docs say not too. Will post back when I know if it works or not. ************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* Ok, so the new mfw builder with OFW 3.55 did fix it. No Blue screen on boot this time. I have a feeling if I would've added Homebrew to the xmb last time I would have gotten the install packages option. Live, and learn I guess. Thanks everyone for your help! |

Is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to load homebrew if my console doesn't have a blu-ray drive, or logic board for it attached?
I've tried a few different emulators, then a few backup managers, but they all sit at a black screen. I have to manually power down the console to get back to the XMB. When I did some searching I saw other people on another forum had this same issue, and some guy said you have to at least have a logic board. If this is true I'm interested to know why the logic board makes a difference. |

Tried loading the game up VIA back-up manager, Then it takes you back to normal XMB and try using the folder above 'install packages'. Or are you talking about .PKG installs?

I installed multiman, rogero, and a few emulators through the 'install packages' option.
When I try to run any homebrew the ps3 goes to a black screen, and just sits there. I can't escape it by holding the home button, I have to power off the console with the power switch on the back. I'm not even getting the backup manager, or emulator to load. I understand what you're saying about when a BM returns you to the XMB, that isn't what's happening. I can't load the backup manager application. |

Sorry I cant help much with this but I do remember this being a problem in the early days of CFW ,if the BD board was missing or not connected properly no homebrew would work properly because of some check done when booting them, I thought it had been sorted out since but maybe not. You could try some firmware like Rebug if it will install without the BD fw, I know debug FW has less security so maybe it will help. I think it should be ok to patch Rebug to not include the BD stuff but best to let someone who knows more confirm first. (because not all standard MFWbuilder tasks will work on Rebug due to different files used).
Im sure there are many more with similar problem so it must be fixable, you might need to remarry a board. ![]() P.S. The reason I remember this is because I had a dodgy connection on my bluray board and used to have to mess with it to get homebrew booting. Last edited by DeViL303; 01-19-2012 at 09:48 PM. |
