Ok, tell me this - which firmware do you have on your PS3 at the moment? Which firmware are you trying to install? Why did you take out your PS3 HDD and format it on your PC? Is your flash drive formatted to FAT32?

You didn't tell me which firmware is currently on your PS3? Is it 3.55 OFW and you're trying to install CFW? Is it below 3.55 and you're trying to install OFW? Is it higher than 3.55? It's very important.

Okay, that's all I needed to know. Now I'll assume you can turn on your PS3 normally and get to XMB. You don't need to go into recovery mode to install CFW, you can do it from XMB directly (Settings -> System Update -> Update from storage media). I still don't understand what exactly are you trying to do with SELECT+START...

Anyway, the only problem you might have is that your file doesn't have the proper name, it's not PS3/UPDATE/UPDATE.PUP, the correct name is \PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP - make sure your flash is formatted to FAT32 and your Kmeaw CFW (or any other) is properly named, then do the update (Settings -> System Update -> Update from storage media).

If you can't install, try downloading your CFW from another source. For example - Kmeaw 3.55 CFW (thanks to @itskamel and his Noob Jailbreak Guide).
