Yes, Another good reason to make all this stuff open and explain how easy it is, is that some "devs" will do a few xmb mods like this while keeping all the info to themselves, then put it in a PUP and call it thier own CFW, When actually 99% of the hardest part was done by other real devs. I hate that sh*te, it really grinds my gears!

For anyone who doesnt get this: YOU CANT USE NOTEPAD++ TO MAKE A CFW!!

@DeViL303
I would see C/c++ or Java.

Cheers , any specific routes to go? Because I know there are quicker and slower ways to learn everthing, Thats why I wanted to explain some of what ive figured out about adding new stuff to XMB, so that others dont have to bother doing the same slow starting period and can jump straight into making functional features. I know how some code works in theory but find it hard to know where to start with learning new languages from scratch. Im hoping to have more free time in the future to learn some.

Cheers. , will check it out.

BTW: Im working on another side of this too if anyone wants to help: To make a tcl task file for PS3MFW Builder that extracts any pup, searches the dev_flash for the files, extracts them, searches for the entries in the xmls/rcos if they exist, throws up an error if they dont, patches in the XMBFM additions, then repacks the PUP. So anyone can patch thier own CFW with this addition if they want to.

Im just gonna copy and paste and mod the script from the other tasks as I dont know how to make my own from scratch.

Im gonna post some more in the tech thread about this after the weekend. Off out now so have fun, might be back on later.

Heres some other info from @ps3hen about this 4.00 pup he has made :

The hardware flasher is only needed to downgrade 3.55 if you're not already on 3.55. As 3.55 is the highest firmware you can install this from. If you're already on 3.55, you don't need the flasher for installation of my pup

Update on "Debug Settings" integration into my modified 4.00 FW:

*I've modified the xmb to act like CEX so its still usable as a retail console(the debug vsh uses different parts of the xml files so the xmb is more stripped down as it is for debugging - I patched this)Of course special debug xmb item will still be there

*The XMB use DeViL303's XMB File Manager (I had to re-port it so it would be used by the debug vsh.self) The Debug Settings in my FW are as functional as the Debug Settings in Rebug's CFW. This is because the system is not flagged as a debug console.

*There is still one major bug which I still need to find a work around - the ps3 crashes when it tries to quit any application and then requires a re-installation of the firmware(which is not good). Although pulling the power cord escapes having to re-install the firmware, it's not an appropriate fix. But on the other hand it does load games and play online. I'd appreciate to help to fix this, although I could try to find a fix myself, but two or more heads are better than one. The sooner I fix this the sooner I can release it.
Cool eh! Apparently you dont need a flasher to modify dev_flash files inside a PUP unless you are on 4.00, modified PUPs can be installed from 3.55 (should have known this as it makes sense) But to reinstall a modified pup wouldnt be possible so downgrading to 3.55 would be required every test. So that means if a stable 4.00 custom FW was made , everyone could just upgrade to it no problem, isnt that good news !

@ps3hen : Can you confirm that this XMBFM works on 4.00 pup you have made as that would be worth a main post update I think? (ive seen what you say about major bug but just wondering if the file Manager is functional when its booted up?)

P.S I reckon your bug could be due to yourr FW trying to write to a registry option thats not there or not accessable or something like that or it wouldnt be ok when just pulling the plug out, it must be something it is writing or trying to write on exit. maybe..

DeVIL, although pascal is the language for beginners (i started with it as well long ago) i do not advise you to start with it, if you want to do something functional that works, learn C not C++ not C# not Java.

C

now about where to start well books would be the obvious answer, the problem is i can't redirect you to any, since the books i learned with are in portuguese and that won't help you, maybe someone knows about a good book
