PS3 on update loop now on blank screen.
I have a fat ps3 the 20gig model cechb01. I am not sure of the firmware that was on it as it was listed as broken when i got it. It turned on and would go into an update loop, i tried multiple different things from blank hdds to hdd from my other ps3 with a cfw on it to tearing apart the system and just cleaning it along with cleaning the processors and adding new thermal paste. upon putting it back together i noticed the clip to the main blu ray cable was half broken obviously meaning that i need a new chip for the blu ray drive. I turned it on again and got back to the update screen one more time and it looped again so i formatted the drive. I have now come to the issue of just a blank screen and thats it. What could i do to get past this? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also i know that it has an older firmware because i can not get into recovery mode by holding down the power button. There is only a 2 beep and then power off. No flashing red lights or yellow light either. I can get the BR to work if i hold down the cable on the pins as well but still only get a blank screen. Put it into service mode and use that to restore.

As I said before. I can not get into service mode, if the ps3 has a firmware earlier than 2.8 or 2.6 i believe then you can not go into service mode because it was not implemented yet.

Fact being, I can not access either. When I would start it before it would bring up the update loop and then after reformatting the drive I have now come to a blank screen and can not access any mode on my PS3.

- Recovery mode/rescue menu is what you get by holding power etc. - Service mode is sonys way of fixing bricks . Basically it works like this (you will find more indepth tutorials for this) You will need a cheap dev dongle that you can program with a service mode payload (like minimus/teensy etc), or a phone/CFW psp or some other tool that can run ps3freedom/service mode payload, then you plug this device into your ps3, along with a USB memory stick with your PUP and a lv2diag.self file you will find around, these 2 files must be on the root of your stick, not in PS3/UPDATE like normal, then you boot up your ps3 by pressing power then eject really quickly , the screen will stay blank but the pup will install, the only way you will know its doing anything is the HDD light and usb stick light will flash, that should sort out this problem. hopefully. Also once a PS3 is in service mode you can install unsigned pups, basically means you could mod the pup anyway you want and it will still install, I swapped all the dev_flash files for debug versions before and it still let me install it because I was in service mode. This was before we could sign pups with failoverflow tools.
A service mode dongle and payload is vital for anyone who fixes PS3s or likes to mess with thier system a lot. ![]() Heres a tut for a dev dongle:

@DeViL303
Thank you for further explaining that to me.
@carldenning I now understand what the service mode is as I kept seeing them both called the same thing so I didn't really think there was a difference so I guess that just me being overconfident in myself and how much I think I know sometimes lol. Also thank you for the information, I have a psp on the way with the tools to put a cfw on it so I will try that method as soon as I get it up and running. I love messing around with these things which is why I bought a broken ps3 when I already have one that works fine... (the ps2 compatibility was a plus that made me buy it). I will post back once I get my psp and test it out. I would do it with my iphone but its an iphone 4 and from my understanding it cant be done with one of those if it is running ios 4.1 or higher which mine has 5.0.1. If there is a way any information on that also would be appreciated but I will also do some searching on my own just to see what I can find. |

Also be sure to ONLY restore to 3.55 or lower (your PS3 can run any normal firmware down to 1.00 with no problems).
Do NOT restore to ANYTHING above 3.55. If you do, you will permenantly be stuck in service mode unless you get a hardware flasher and downgrade, but then you will have to worry about syscon hash checks, so be safe and follow the instructions to the T. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk |
