@carldenning I now understand what the service mode is as I kept seeing them both called the same thing so I didn't really think there was a difference so I guess that just me being overconfident in myself and how much I think I know sometimes lol.

Also thank you for the information, I have a psp on the way with the tools to put a cfw on it so I will try that method as soon as I get it up and running. I love messing around with these things which is why I bought a broken ps3 when I already have one that works fine... (the ps2 compatibility was a plus that made me buy it). I will post back once I get my psp and test it out. I would do it with my iphone but its an iphone 4 and from my understanding it cant be done with one of those if it is running ios 4.1 or higher which mine has 5.0.1. If there is a way any information on that also would be appreciated but I will also do some searching on my own just to see what I can find.

Ok, best of luck.

P.S. PSPjig is what you want for psp enable ps3 service mode.

hi
i had this same loop failure and i got around it by making a mistake.
i had 2 ps3's stripped 1 had this loop i then put the bdvd from the other ps3 into it by mistake and it let the update complete!! the bdvd wouldnt work after it restarted but by putting the correct one back in and re-installing the fw update (same one that just completed) it worked and read games again. i have no idea why this worked maybe someone els on here knows but try it see if it works for you

You make a good point. Although if you do not wish to open up the PS3, use jaicrab's lv2diag file with no bluray check.

if the blu-ray cable clip is broken that's the whole problem then
it fails because the bd drive can't be updated
only way around this is use a NOBD pup or a new clip (connector)

easy fix nothing special

@DeViL303 Well I was attempting to try it with my G2 that happened to be laying around, I played with it for a while and then from what I was looking at also at what was listed in the information that you gave, when people went into service mode it would bring up the XMB with a big red box. Problem for me is that I don't even have a firmware installed on the hdd as i formatted that drive. Also it seems to be only for downgrading, maybe this is all just going over my head somehow but how would i go about just forcing it to install a firmware.

Edit: It took me a while but after I just kept trying I eventually got it to work, now I have ran into another interesting problem. It seems that the GPU does not work as I am not getting any display. I got the stick to format and the ps3 does not turn itself off anymore which does tell me that it is working now to some extent. I guess its time to go a little deeper lol.

Not getting ylod or blinking red light so thinking that it might not be gpu. Also the fact that the video was working prior to me formatting the original drive which gave me the blank screen in the first place. I notice when I turn it on though im not getting any hdd activity.

After playing around for another hour or so I finally got it to work its way back on and transmit video and sound. After about 1-2 minutes it kindly splattered my screen with colorful shades of blue green and red . It turned off a few seconds later with a blinking red light. I poked around at it for a minute and then tried turning it back on and to my not surprise HEEY no video lol. Turned it back off and the put a little pressure above where the GPU is and hit the power switch immediately getting green then red blinking light with beeps. I suppose a new mobo is in order. I might try the heat fan option just to get some use out of it and make sure that everything else is working fine. Wish there was a more permanent solution but I know the best thing is to just get a new mobo so yeah. I do appreciate all of the help and I have learned a new step in PS3 repair lol .

ok, sound like its on the verge of YLOD, I wouldnt bother with heat gun method, take it too a laptop repair place and get the GPU reflowed, it will be worth it. If you have it already stripped down for them they probably wouldnt charge you as much.

What you said about the red box and all is irrelevant, you can unbrick bricked ps3s with service mode so you dont need to be able to tell its in service mode, it will just install whatever pup is on usb stick regardles of wether or not there is any FW on it to start with. Also it can be used for downgrading but can be used to install any pup file. just dont go over 3.55 or you will be stuck in SM forever

Good luck with the GPU problem.
