Hey guys,
I apologize ahead of time if this has been addressed elsewhere, but I definitely searched and couldn't find an answer. Anyway here's my ultranoob question...

I'm on the fence about switching from 3.55-CFW to OFW in the interest of playing some of the newer games like Skyrim and Dark Souls. I understand that this is essentially a one way road so I want to be really sure before I take the plunge. One other obvious benefit (or not, depending on who you ask ) of being on OFW is being able to use PSN. Now I bought my system used on 3.41 OFW and switched to Kmeaw myself, so I'm pretty sure that the console wouldn't be banned for CFW use, but the guy I bought it from does do downgrades, and there's more than one way to get a ban...

In light of this, is there any way to determine whether a console has gotten the banhammer from Sony, via serial number or mac address or anything like that, without gambling on it (IE: upgrading to OFW and attempting to log in)? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated!

not that i know of. but i wont ever update my ps3 . cause my buddy had it during the "rebug psn" incedent and he went nuts downloading crap im sure they have its mac adress lol

I would not worry about it. Last year when we were all able to go online with our modded consoles, I was online downloading and playing games online. I was even playing my emulators while signed in. I ended up installing ofw on that console and have had no problems.

Thanks for the reply! Are you basically suggesting that the likelihood of it being banned is low? For now I'm going to switch to 3.55 OFW and test PSN. If I can create an account and login I may upgrade to latest OFW.

What was the Rebug PSN incident? I'm guessing PSN authorization checks were bypassed and everyone was playing backups / unsigned CFWs on PSN?

edit: apparently my plan won't work... you have to update to latest OFW to even attempt to sign up / sign in. Well wish me luck...

u cant get test psn on 3.55 , u have to be on the latest fw which is 4.0 to do anythink with psn online

lol the "rebug" incedent was when we had online with 3.55 and then me lost it for about week ... then rebug cfw came out and people figured out how to change settings to get onto an alternate psn for debugs and devs ect. . anyways there was a virtual creditcard on all accounts made on this network and you could easily add funds. and buy stuff from the playstation store... yes people were playing back ups online but thats nothing if thats all you did go ahead update.. but with the rebug incedent some people were stealing up to 2000$ in stuff . if you did that like a bunch of people. I wouldent update.


But if you did not steal directly from PS store... you are fine!


i would delete traces of cfw on it then update......... but meh i have a ps3 updated from 3.55 kmeaw directly to 4.0 and it seems to be fine . im on psn

Yeh I just discovered this and edited my post. I'm going for broke and updating to 4.0 .

Does this mean you can keep your file-system intact post update... as in keep installed pkg files and whatnot?

you can keep installed pkgs.... you wont be able to run any of them tho. so its pointless to keep unless its one of exe trim alls releases i hear they work on OFW but im not sure if they work by updateing i think you have to do data transfer ... anyways if you really want to go back to ofw. update . you shouldent have a problem unless you stole direct from ps store like some... IF you want to be on the safe side tho... do a system format then update..
if you want to keep your save data . make a back up . and delete anyfiles from it that may be tied with cfw . then restore it after update

Just erase anything homebrew related. You can all Sony and ask if your psn id thing has been banned.

Yeh no worries, that's a bit much / ballsy if you ask me. I just got into the PS3 scene and am more interested in the homebrew community than in backups. Anyway, I updated to 4.0 OFW and no issues. The only thing that sucks are Sony's prices... it's no Steam for sure. In the end it's definitely worth being able to play newer games that don't support <3.55
