The PS3 is easier to mod but it's becoming harder and harder to find "hackable" systems.

With the XBox360, there isn't really any softmod, you either flash the DVD drive with a custom firmware which requires you to extract the drive's key, or you JTAG/RGH it which requires soldering, dumping the NAND, etc etc. Also, a flashed XBox360 CAN go online, as can an RGH XBox360 with a dual-NAND board, provided you use the unhacked NAND for it; PS3's can dual-boot if you have a hardware flasher installed and also have 2 hard drives, but generally speaking, there is no PSN access with a CFW PS3. As for getting caught online with a flashed XBox360, it's easy to avoid, provided you use the most recent LT+ iXtreme firmware and don't play games that haven't been released yet or have bad topology data.

Well, you cannot play online on a hacked PS3 at all because the hackable firmware is 3.55 and the current version is 4.00. No PS3 on CFW can access the PSN at this point in time. If you are getting a new PS3, chances are it will be a 3000 model, which is not hackable and not downgradeable.
Xbox scene I do not follow, so my knowledge is limited to: 1. Yes you can have live, but not with the RGH hack or Jtag. Just a flashed dvd drive. Apply patches to game discs and you can play them online safely enough. Though it is a risk. 2. No matter what, you will need to open the console up to hack it. No way around that fact.

yeah , I forgot to mention I knew about the psn and the updates past 3.55/3.60 . But If i were to purchase a ps3 id make sure its an older model.
I guess that helps me , but still theres that possibility of getting caught. I dont mind it, but once your console gets banned your ****** . And if you wanted too sell it, you'd have to fool someone, or sell it for really low. |

************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* what's also nice about the ps3 is the backward compatibility.. seeing as most of the games are easier to find on ps2, opposed to xbox which are limited to find. |

If you play a bad burn of a game (even offline) you can flag your console, and the next time you go online, you get flagged on the network side of things. Then your console is ****ed. The profile you play on is irrelevant as it's the console itself which gets banned, not the profile. There is no reversal for this, shy of getting the KV from another console which is not banned, which requires an unbanned console anyway, and thus is kind of dumb to do. I have and still do play some backups online, and have not been banned yet. As for PS3, it is WAY harder to get a backwards compatible PS3 than a backwards compatible Xbox360, as only launch PS3's were backwards compatible with PS2 games, although they all play PS1 games. With Xbox360s, AFAIK, you just need to put in an Xbox1 game, and connect to Live. It'll say you need to download the files for backward compatibility to become active, so do it, and it'll run over 200 Xbox1 titles, no problem.
