Well, I'm out. I extracted the ps2emu files from Cobra CFW, threw them in dev_flash/ps2emu, and tried the boot_ps2 app. Instead of rlod or return to XMB, it spins the disc up, controller de-syncs, and it locks up on a black screen.
Here's what I think happens: boot_ps2 simply calls ps2_softemu.self with kernel privs, the OFW one (in >2.50 anyway) will not boot discs (only PSN Classics) whereas the Cobra one will boot anything (discs, mountpoints, backups) providing the dongle is present. I don't know what the pst_emu.self and pst_gxemu.self do, but would imagine they are the Cobra-enabled versions of OFW files. I think it's cool that PS2 discs boot on non-BC PS3s running 2.50 though. I just wish I had component cables for my PS2, because it looks terrible on my LCD. And my CECHA01 is getting flakey, so I avoid using it. [edit] Oh, and one last thing: if anyone wants to play around with this, careful with downgrading in FSM- I was experimenting with going lower than 2.45, which is what "normal" downgrade via recovery and System Update Debug tells me is the lowest, but I tried 2.36 Debug anyway(which runs fine on the CECHA and CECHG), it semi-bricked, and when I unbricked it with 2.50, it had quite handily formatted my drive with 2 years of saves, trophies, etc  I'm back on KMEAW and reinstalling everything.

if thps3/4 is playable idc if it's low quality. i definitively don't need saves for thps3. i really crave either game.
