hey space dagger,
i ran into something interesting while playing around with this idea some time ago ..
first i thought of emulating a psn server on my pc but had problems because of the unknown passphrases and other stuff .. so i just connected the ps3 via pc to psn and downloaded some stuff to analyze the behavior ..
so this is what i found out: psn seems to be a trusted environment for the ps3 the downloaded content (coming from the psn server) does not seem to need a valid cert ..
so if you could switch the "downloaded .pkg" content before install process with a little tool to your own signed pkg (real npdrm) the ps3 should be able to install and run it ..

it still works but you need to find a different method from the old one that got PATCHED
(i can swap any link from the store to any .pkg) the .pkg just needs to be signed

like yesterday i swaped a 30mb download link for mag that is over 4gig the download bar went all the way up to 1560% (or close to that)

you need "franken sdk" to sign a .pkg for FW above 3.60 or so they said (gitbrew) but i cant find any releases for this or any recent news about it

if we figure out how to sign .pkg it would be a BiG step towards installing packages but from what i understand homebrew still wont boot it would still needs to be signed (the EBOOT or what ever)

what i dont understand is we can sign a EBOOT.pbp for psp on OFW
BUT not on ps3?
the ps3 minis use the same file (well they look the same on a pc)

i can sort off install homebrew on 4.10 but like u said cant boot it because of the eboot not signed

OP has a valid question.
Yes, while you may be able to switch .pkg using a proxy (which is because sony isn't using HTTPS for downloading .pkg files), you will still have a problem in installing them and running them.
If you switch the pkg download to an official .pkg, then there are two possibilities :
1 - it's a free demo, and it will (should anyways) work, install and run and everything...
2 - if it's a non-free game, then it will (should) install, but it won't run because you don't have a "license" to play it.
If you switch the pkg to a homebrew pkg, it won't work because the pkg file isn't properly signed by Sony. and even if it was and it did install, it wouldn't change the fact that it won't rnu because the EBOOT isn't a properly signed NPDRM file.
Hope that answers the question.
