Green->Yellow->Red flashing -- "ylod" or not? How to fix?
First some pre-stuff that has happened:
Around two weeks or so ago I get "weird colours" while playing, and since around one week or so ago my games start freezing suddenly. Then we come to today. I go buy thermal paste, apply it and get 'ready' for some BF3. It says a new patch is required to be downloaded. Ok whatever. Ok I am downloading the patch, but suddenly, the PS3 shuts off. And then we get to the tricky part: okay so this is what happens on my PS3 slim right now 1) I plug power plug into the PS3 -> normal standby light 'red' turns on 2) I press the power button -> TV doesn't recognize the PS3 3) For ~40 seconds approximately, with no video or audio, the PS3 has a green light on 4) After this ~40 second period a yellow light flashes once, and then a red light starts flashing 24/7 then. So what does this mean? Today I changed the thermal paste inside my PS3, and then boom, it goes broke? Just very bad luck? Is this fixable, and if so, how? I won't be paying Sony for the repair so that is out of question. I got once video out after accidentally making a reset from 1080p HDMI quality to 5xx SD quality, but now even reseting won't work. However, in the 'reset screen' it was asked if I wanted to use the HDMI cable, but my controller wouldn't work.
EDIT: corrected beeps as flashes EDIT2: No flashing red light now or a yellow light; however, still doesn't work properly. If I keep holding the power button, shuts down after 15 seconds Last edited by viljo; 02-17-2012 at 04:04 PM. |

maybe. ylod is usually green > flash yellow > red but the symptoms are spot on signs of gpu failure
can you get into recovery menu at all? there are many guides. just click on the search button and type ylod fix your other thread has been closed. no need to make more than one thread

If recovery menu is accessed by "(beep...beep...beep)->(beep...beep...beepbeep)", then no my PS3 won't do it.
It only allows me to do "beep.....................................beep", and then turns off. This loop always comes if I try to do the bolded part. Which one of you two is right? So is this the dreaded ylod or not? If so, I'll "oven" or heat-gun, and then it should work for now? Last edited by viljo; 02-16-2012 at 01:23 PM. |

one being what he mentioned in the 1st stages, his ps3 is pixelated after 5-10 mins of starting it up or whilst playing games and then after pixelating it freezes, this is a sign you are about to YLOD, he also has red flashing light which is another type of ylod. Either way he has to reflow certain areas on the motherboard to fix this problem and even then its not a permanent fix because it needs a really good reflow to last a long period of time. Watch some youtube vids on how to fix ylod/reflow machines, you will see a red flashing light with an experienced person telling you its YLOD. viljo, i just recently repaired my cok-002 board which had the exact same problems ( Pixelating, freezing and shutting down) Last edited by OGzxFTW; 02-16-2012 at 02:39 PM. |

Other than that, you will need a 'normal' screwdriver and a torx screwdriver to get the motherboard out. Also need to remove the old thermal paste, and apply new. |
