Smile Words, two cents on shenanigans.

This PS3 hacking scene is very...concerning to say the least. Just my two cents, I think it's a very balanced view of what's going on, at least from my perspective!

First off, wanting PS3 keys does not mean that people want to pirate. I want legitimate backups. My PS3's drive is dead, gone, finito, and as such I have a system that I cannot play games on. The warranty is long gone, and I shouldn't have to spend a few hundred dollars to play games I payed good money for. Backups are not the same as Piracy, and should not be considered as one.

tl;dr, Backups != Piracy

Second, what's with all the useless drama? It's not going to get you anywhere. Ask nicely, do what you can to help, really annoys me to see 'baww useless release baww'

Thirdly, it does somewhat bother me that PS3 devs ask for donations to produce results. This isn't commercial and it shouldn't be turned into something that is. Other scenes do it as a hobby, and ask for donations as a 'thank you', not as 'gimme money or I won't try'. Yes there are morons but there's morons everywhere. Ignore the trolls, and hang out with the cool people, and remember why you even started developing in the first place!

Finally, I think if trusted developers worked together anything is possible. Whether it be PS3 keys, or CFW. It's software and it can be defeated, and it can be disassembled.

I think more communication between developers, both between each other and with the community is going to present better results. Complaining about how something is useless or demanding things should, in my view, really result in a ban. It's rude, it's unnecessary, it's scaring developers away, and it's ruining the scene's image. I bet that at least one of the developers that left already has CFW running on their PS3s while some of you sit here biting each other's heads off. Why can't we all get along?

I couldnt agree more. If developers and community people come together more and no crying i bet we could have had cfw on 4.00 already.

I agree with the majority of your post. Just one question: how are you making backups if your drive is dead?

one of the reasons why xbox scene good and still live - nobody cares 'bout piracy. But ps3 scene is all about - "noooo piracy is baaad, so we won't share our work blah blah blah"... Maybe there were much more results if some ppl didn't make drama bout piracy, at least there certainly would be less posts like: "this shi**y sh*t is useless"

I came from the Wii Scene after saw failOverflow (team tweezers) presentation. And I notice the big difference. The Wii scene is still kicking 4 years later. The biggest difference is the community. PS3 scene is fragmented with all these scene sites and developers against each other. Not to mention all the "fakes" that just want attention. While the Wii scene seems to have more working together and less drama.

There was a little drama in the wii scene when the whole "back up loader" came up and the piracy vs non-piracy debate but after a few months, they put aside their differences and came together (for the most part) and kept developing and using tools that developers made. They kept with the open source and the community kept making more things/improving old things.

I really don't have much hope for the ps3 scene since it's closed off until someone hacks the latest cfw which i don't expect it to happen but it would be a nice surprise. If that were to happen, then we will get a whole new group of people and some more developers that might actually all come together for a common goal to hack the F**k outta the ps3. But as it stands, the ps3 scenei is gonna keep getting smaller and smaller as people get impatient and update. I'm not gonna support TB or cobra. They are basically profiting off of work that would never been possible without all the big developers that have mostly left the scene for one reason or the other. So much for open source, sharing and helping which is what jailbreak community is all about.

Oh btw, Piracy is here and always will be. No use fighting about it. Just accept it and move on and help us find exploits or bugs that can us full access to everything the ps3 has to offer. And play the latest games.

Download--which is not illegal because I own said games. I'm not going to lie about it. I'm not going to start the debate whether piracy is right or wrong, I do think developers need some money and credit for their work, but the way I see it, is that some of them gouge us and don't really work on their products to make it good, but rather just pump things out to get it out the door.

I like backups. Faster loading from HDD, less noise from drive, no disc drive/actual disc to worry about scratching, so many pros!

Finding out the issues that plague everyone, and fixing them is going to get us through whatever the scene is going through. It may start with a few of us but I'm glad other people share my views. Enough fits, we all want the same thing, a free and open PS3 platform.

Edit:

The Wii scene and 360 scenes are quite different, yes. It's just a different atmosphere. I think that if we wanna get the scene back up to full strength we need to find the problems and tackle them. Butthurt administration from different sites is just that and there's not much that can be done, those who deny logic can't be defeated by it. There are people out there who are patiently waiting for good news of a JB. I'm one of them. Not for piracy (because frankly, we've all done it, admitting or not, I just prefer to buy my games now when I can :P) but for legitimate reasons. I used to pirate 360 games. I don't anymore. I bought the games that I pirated and now I play them without worry.

As for releasing the keys without getting sued, key.bin maker in the Wii scene makes a key.bin (surprise?) for the Wii, don't remember quite exactly what this is for, some kind of Wii decryption, but the application has the algorithm used to make the key, and then makes it without having copyrighted material in the application itself. Perhaps this would be the way to go when someone decides to release the PS3 keys?

If you live in the US, this is simply not true. You're only allowed a backup of your original copy. I know it's retarded, but downloading is still considered piracy even if you own an original copy. I don't know about other countries though.

That's true, however there's no way of telling if it's the original copy, since all of the discs are nearly identical and what's not can be blamed on reading errors :P

We are all arguing over a Games Console here I don't think we are considered the "cool people" lol jk

But every thing else I agree with lol
