PS3 YLOD Repair HELP

First off wow guys nice site, the design of this is how all forums should be.

Okay down to business.

I got a PS3 40gb version off a dude for $60 (yes it has some minor problems)

The unit itself works fine, he told me it got the YLOD and he fixed it with a hairdryer ( i know right) anyways now the only problem with the unit is wireless controllers do not work, however they work fine in the USB

I am yet to trouble shoot this i was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this as i am guessing i am not going to sync it and away it goes because if you fix a YLOD chances are you tried that basic step.

Things i think it might be.

Sync (highly unlikely)
Cable has been pulled while disassembling the unit
Firmware version has a bug (only guessing has this been known to happen)
Card has been overheated due to a nub using a hairdryer or YLOD

First thing i will be doing when i get the time is pull it apart replace the thermal paste, give it a good blow out.

Cut the fan RPM cable and attach a POT to it then connect it to a 3.3volt source to take the fan up to 12v (ensure no more overheating)

Anything else i should do check any thoughts much appreciated

Wink

hey i dont know about your sunc problem, but I did recently (yesterday) this fan mod with a pot and it works quite well. I used a 250k pot but it is extremely sensitive to adjust the fan speed.
The ps3 had ylod and I fixed it, has been running fine with the fan mod.
(try to find a good adjustment so that it blows alot of air but is not too loud.)
I drilled also a hole in the bottom under the fan that is as big as the fan and removed the grill from the back vent holes for much better airflow. If you dont have a large drill you can make many smaller holes that will look pretty cool if you get them in a straight line :P
With these mods I am pretty shure it runs atleast 10 degrees (celsius) cooler!
One thing I havent done yet (idk if it really helps) is to cool the power supply with a small fan because mine gets really hot when I got the case off so idk how hot it is whit case on!!

as for the wireless, check the small board which is attached on the aluminium plate, there should be a black capacitor-like piece. I have seen that thing been torn off from ppl removing the motherboard with no attention, it may be detached in some point. As for the fan, do not drill the bottom. The fan is designed to cool all of the motherboard and PSU by sucking fresh air through it, so if you hole the bottom, the motherboard itself won't be cooled anymore

i sincerly doubt it : ) your cell and rsx may be cooler, but not the PSU and the rest of the upper side components on your motherboard ^^ That's because by making a hole at the bottom, you disrupt the flow inside of the case...

well the airflow must be minimal on top of the mb because all the vent holes are on the sides atleast on my ps3. so the air just cuts right under the mb and wont circulate/flow etc on top of the mb. It would be different if there was vent holes in the middle of the top cover.
This is what Im thinking of (see attatchment)IMG_20120223_181931.jpg And anyways I think it is much more important to keep the cell and rsx cooler after you have fixed an YLOD so It will last longer...
BTW mine is without the cover so the psu cools just fine. LOL my bluray drive does not accept discs atm if I have the cover on, ps3 vertical or if I screw it in place!?! WTF... oh well...

Hey thanks for this will check, if this compenent is missing anychance you can get me the partnumber off yours so i can solder on a replacement.

Thanks for help everyone will not be drilling holes the work done on static pressue would have been alot, the air flow would be exactly what it should be however i am sure they use **** solder, using a pot and a switch should solve that problem, i will atack a switch between the put and the rpm wire so instead of an open circut it will revert it back to normal. Will post a howto for people and show you how to calculate a less sentitive pot using VIR triangle formula.

Is it possible to buy this card anywhere if he has knackered it?

i don't know man, it's not even a real component, it's just a ****ty piece of plastic with two metal rails going through it... I'm not even sure what that stuff does, if it's just to connect and they couldn't do it another way or what. Way as well be what creates or receives the wireless signal... http://rayvolution.net/junk/PS3/PS3-11.JPG
you can clearly see it in this pic right beside the PSU, following the wire : )

that is a wireless cable for TX & RX it is used to transfer a wireless signal it is a very common componment and can be purchessed.

However is it the wire side they break or the chip side (conector i am talking about)

either way is repairable i am still waiting to get my unit to investigate.

Might be able to help people on this website too i am an X comptia repair tech for laptops/computer hardware and understand electronics,.

Happy to help anyone once i have a play and work it out.
