I have dubiously acquired 2 "bad" PS3's. They are in various states of post-tinkering. They fail to boot with the three beeps, yellow light, then flashing red light. I'm assuming a reflow will be necessary (if that even works).

So my question is --- assuming I can get the to boot, can the PS3 run without the BD drive, perhaps once CFW is installed?

I have one BD drive (and fixin's) in unknown state, plus I could probably borrow the BD drive from my good PS3.

you can install cfw3.55 nobd
but this doesn't allow running anything
you need a working daughter board it doesn't even have to be married but without that
everything black screens

you need a blu ray board but not the drive. alot of backups run discless

3.55 kmeaw is the cfw i use with a dead blu ray. most games run.

So even after CFW installed, there's no way to spoof the check for this daughterboard?

No. One of them spins up the fan, but both of them seem like they're starting up, show green+yellow, beep three times, and shut down with red flashing lights. From what I'm reading online, that means an overheat problem, or the equivalent of x360's three-rings-of-death, probably requiring solder reflow.

green than yellow beep 3 times shut down with red flashing light is YLOD and you require a reball to fix this.
Regarding no logic board then nothing will run, I know I have a ps3 here on 3.41 but the motherboard does not talk to the logic board ( I have tried over 6 logic boards and a remarry ) and as a result its nothing more than a door stop even though it boots to the xmb perfectly.

try replacing thermal paste and do a reflow. if that fails check the solder isnt cracked or broken. you may need to reball the system. ill do it for 50 bux, pay when u get the working console back.
