n00b needs help after Sony Firmware upgrade kills system
So, here is my story. I have an old 40G PS3 that I bought for my theater room to play Blu-Ray's on, and to play the occasion game on. I had to take the room apart for about 2 years. I put the room back together the other day and went to play a Blu-Ray. I was greeted by the message.
The system needs to generate a new encryption key to play the Blu-Ray. Please upgrade your system. Up till this point the system had never been connected to my network. So, it was running on the version of code the system shipped with. So, I connected the system to allow it to do an upgrade over the wire. I tried to doing an upgrade from console 2 or 3 times but would give me an error saying it lost connection to the server during the time it was downloading firmware. I downloaded the 4.11 firmware from Sony, and placed it on a USB stick to upgrade the firmware to the latest rev. I loaded the firmware from USB as the instructions stated. The system showed to be going through the upgrade. The system re-booted itself and came up to a 4.11 upgrade screen where just stayed hung. I rebooted the system numerous times with no success. So, it just hung and died on the upgrade. I called Sony, and they tried to tell me to take it into recover mode. From what I read recover mode is only avalible in 2.60 and later. I believe my firmware was older than 2.60, and so instead of getting a "double beep" on the 3rd beep when holding down the power key, it would just shut off the system. The Sony folks offered to fix the system for $100. I asked the guy point blank "So, what you are saying is that you forced me into an upgrade, into firmware that you apparently hadn't done regression testing against all the older versions? The version you had me load has bricked my system, and I am supposed to pay you $100 to fix what was caused for you own poor coding and software version control?" The tech said "I understand your frustration. I'm sorry you had the issue. But yes, if you want us to fix the system it its $100." After that I decided to see if I could fix it myself and started looking into the various PS3 forums (including this one). Which put me where I am now. I just decided to see what a drive swap would do, so I installed a spare 320G drive and let it format the drive. The drive had some physical layer issues and hung at 99%. So, as one last thing to try, I re-installed the original 40G drive and it now came up with a message saying the drive needed to be formatted (again). It "formatted" the drive and the system came up. I took it downstairs and put in a DVD, and it came up with the same message about neeed to generate a new key. I looked into the system software version,a nd it shows that it did not update, and the system is at 2.30 Up until this point I had not really looked at hacking the PS3. Really the only thing that drove this upgrade was the system being unwilling to play my Blu-Ray's any more. So now, my question is really about what to do with the system. 1) I don't really have anything to save on the system I really want to keep. 2) I had not read any of the forums before I did the upgrade about what level of firmware to stay at 3) I'm not opposed to hacking the box, loading some custom firmware,etc.. I guess the question is should I hack the box? Is there really anything to gain by doing so? Last edited by J-R0d; 02-27-2012 at 02:58 PM. |

you have to use an e3 or progskeet flasher to downgrade to 3.55 of 3.41 to use cfw. you would gain the ability torun homebrew. snes nthings like that. also u could get pirated games. and linux. you would lose playstation network.

Made an edit to my original post. The system is not at 4.11, but is at 2.30. After doing the drive swap back and forth and the upgrade failure it managed to come back up on the original OS.
So, now the question is what to do with the system since what I am really looking at is where to upgrade it to? |

i think the guy has a BD Drive problem... he shouldn't update to FWs without a noBD patch. BUT that's what i think

@J-R0d
If the PS3 still asks you to update when you try & play a BluRay Movie & you have installed Rebug CFW 355.2 .? Go into CEX/DEX Rebug selector options & set to -> (REBUG MODE) This will spoof your PS3 to 4.0 . This will get you passed, being blocked & forced to update your firmware & allow you to play you BluRay Movies on CFW 355.. Rebug has its own built in spoof ,as of now it is update 6 & spoofed to 4.0. As long as you install Rebug 355.2 CFW correctly, you should know how it works.
Do not install a stand alone spoof if using Rebug 355.2 .If you are using any other CFW/MFW you can use the 4.0 stand alone spoof for these CFW->AKA-> Custom FirmWares.. If you did choose any CFW 355 remember to flash back to official 355 firmware if you want to update past this = Your choice .there is no going back without a flasher & make the right decision ,stay on CFW 355 OFW -> SUX

first install 2.50 (with recovery mode which you gonna need later on)
use repair filesystem/database in recovery mode (this should fix tables on harddrive) if that does not help, try the lv2diag.self for solving RSOD (this should fix perconsole keytables in cvtrm @ flash) last option is remarry, your system needs to be on 3.50 or lower to be able to do that (this should set all marriage/BDdrivekeys in sync with the rest of the unit again) for documentative purposes, what is the error number of the message? --- The system needs to generate a new encryption key to play the Blu-Ray. Please upgrade your system. Needed for above mentioned steps: * http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/2.50_CEX * http://ps3devwiki.com/files/lv2diag/..._Lv2diag_RSOD/ * http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/Remarry_Bluray_Drive See also: * http://www.fixya.com/support/t509085...e_update_renew * http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/Bluray_Drive_Firmware Last edited by euss; 02-27-2012 at 09:33 PM. |
