Well yes there is but you won't get the same experience performance-wise compared to a 60gb/early 80gb PS3 as your model contains no PS2 hardware at all. That being said, you can still play PS2 games on any PS3 but only currently via a Cobra USB dongle but as I said it's an extremely buggy and unfinished PS2 software-only emulator by Sony so don't expect high compatibility.

That's the only way right now and has been for some time but I still recommend picking up a 60gb PS3 for what you want to do.
