PS3 Cooling Method

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this website, and a moderate newbie to hardware modding, at least on the ps3.

Recently I have been using a PS3 Fat 60gb, and it has been freezing and overheating repeatedly. I opened it up and saw that the thermal compound on the heat sinks are pretty much gone, so I am planning to purchase Arctic Silver 5 and putting that on there. Question about that, should I use rubbing alcohol to get rid of the old thermal compound and then apply arctic silver or is there some other way I should go about it? And to apply arctic silver i put a small dot on the center of the heat sink and then spread it with a credit card or the like. I am asking this to make sure I am not doing anything to kill my ps3.

Furthermore, are there any easy cooling mods that I can put on my ps3 to try to head off the YLOD? I have been looking around here and I was wondering if there were any that were highly suggested to cool down the ps3 for a moderate cost?

Thanks for your time.

Thanks, I never noticed the mod tutorial section of this forum. I'll give it a try.

One thing though. I thought reflowing was just for YLOD ps3s, mine isn't there (yet), but the ps3 has been overheating and freezing a lot recently. Will I still need to reflow?

EDIT: Ok I notice that it says to keep it from coming back, so this is a good way thing to do.

Thank you so much alienkid.

Well, a reflow is a temporary fix. You really want a reball. <<<<<<<<This is a more permanent fix.

Hmm don't know about everyone else but i use acetone to remove thermal compound. As for cooling mods, I have been looking into that too. I plan on water cooling my system if not my original plan of using peltiers.

What exactly entails a reball? I'm assuming replacing the entire heat sink/CPU/GPU?

How much does a Water Cooler typically run that would work for a ps3? I have been looking into those too and they are pretty pricey.

Yeah, they remove and clean the chips up in a heated controlled workstation assuring no damage to the motherboard or chips and apply thermal paste equivalent to OEM standards. A little expensive but well worth it in the long run.

Hmm well if you get the right parts etc I don't think you will be spending too much. I figure about 150 USD is enough for a water cooling solution, a price I would pay personally to keep my PS3 alive, its a Phat 60GB so some may know why I want it to survive as long as possible, like maybe you since you have one too .

Reball is what alienkid state, but just think of it as replacing all the old solder with new solder, as solder in PS3s are lead free and that gives them a lower melting point, and so the lead free solder is replaced with leaded solder which has a higher melting point so that the PS3s Chips wont have much effect on it.

Lol, yeah I think I get where you're coming from.

And I see, it's a shame there are so many of these modifications that have come from low manufacturing standards, but learning to do this is certainly fun.

I got a new ps3 last week...it didn't last 1 hour, now I ordered a new motherboard with 3.41. I hope it works!
