Hello,

I am noob. And this is my first post. I have a ps3 slim running on fw 3.72. I simply want to convert it into a linux box. What are my options? I am perfect fine just running linux.

You have no options lol. You will have to either downgrade your firmware or mod it with custom firmware. You will lose the ability to play online either way you go.

Don't give him the wrong idea bro, there IS no CFW to mod his PS3 with if he's on 3.7x.

Only option to recover OOS is a hardware downgrade to either a 3.55 or 3.41 so you can install an OOS enabled CFW, or going specifically for the old 3.2x OFW which allowed OOS natively.

Either way, your PS3 will NEED to be downgraded to allow OOS, and you'll need to buy a hardware flasher to achieve this. In addition, after downgrading you'll need to create your own Lv1 patched MFW using MFW Builder, in order to patch the checks made by syscon, and avoid your system being a brick, due to syscon still picking up your previous 3.7x fw version.

Do some reading up on Progskeet or the Teensy++ 2.0. I'd recommend the E3Flasher, but... Nah. XD

Of course he can. He can grab the E3 Flasher and downgrade his 3.7x firmware as long as the PS3 is not one of the new consoles. I never said anything about a 3.7+ cfw.

Errrrr. You did, you said "downgrade your firmware or mod it with custom firmware"

That means he has a choice of doing one or the other and he does not as things stand at the moment.

Plus he has to be careful with the downgrade anyways as he has to make sure he does not try to go lower than his stock OFW.

You are saying he can not downgrade to an official firmware that allows you to put OtherOS on your PS3? Or put a custom firmware on the PS3 which will also allow you to boot to OtherOS.

I thought progskeet allowed you to downgrade your firmware which will then allow you to put custom firmware on your ps3.

Not without downgrading with a hardware flasher.

Click the "PS3 Scene Status" banner at the top of the page and look at the "How to downgrade from..." section. You need to be at 3.55 or lower to install linux.
