Reballing or reflowing your ps3 should fox the problem. There is a tutorial here you can search for. Requires you to take apart your ps3.

could it possibly be a loose wire from the thermostat or something like? and what does reflowing entail?

what you have is probably a CECHG with a high voltage PSU:
http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/Power...U_compatiblity
http://www.ps3devwiki.com/wiki/SKU_Models#PS3_Fat

That thing is a walking Sun... I suggest, besides reballing and reflowing, that you replace the psu like mentioned on the wiki, for safe measure, and so that it doesn't happen again for a really long time. CONSULT A SPECIALIST ON THESE MATTERS!!!

Overheating is NOT YLOD.
What is causing this is probably the thermal paste under the heatspreaders, I suggest lifting the RSX heatspreader to change the thermal paste underneath it (you have to be very careful however, it's a risky thing to do). Reflowing or reballing would only make the problem even worse since it damages the paste.
If it still overheats after this, it's probably the Cell, whose heatspreader is much harder to remove.

<---agrees with @pereb27 . Also if you haven't tried it, open and clean out all vents and remove dust build up. If you have a bunch of USB things plugged in try a powered hub to reduce power requirements from your ps3 psu(power supply unit). It all adds up

I'm almost certain these fat "release date" consoles (xbox and PS3) were meant to **** up! EVERYONE I know who had one no longer has it. :\
