Don't feel too bad. I bought a PSP years ago, and the first thing I did was update it to (IIRC) 3.10FW. Then, a few minutes later read online about CFW, which was possible up to the FW right before 3.10. It took months before someone found an exploit via the game Lumines. Talk about frustration...
