It's just a high security MCU.
An MCU is for all intentions an micro computer that has it's own everything built right in. Just like a computer it can run anything, but it also must be built for that particular computer.
They are used in a lot of devices and perform any number of completely different roles.

Well, according to the Actel ProASIC 3 web page it is an FPGA. So, in reality, ANYTHING could be inside that FPGA. Also, it has flash memory so all the software we are looking for is inside the FPGA too (not like other FPGA that need an external memory to reprogram itself on boot).

I was wondering, what happened to the update somebody was able to unpack. It was like a s19 file or something like that right? Did somebody already find out for what microcontroller this program was compiled? By reading the ProASIC 3 decription there's a high probability that the program runs on a Cortex-M1. But well, the reality is that is an FPGA so there's really no way of knowing what's in there for sure.

Also, does anyone knows what does the updater does? Does it reprogram the FPGA or just the embedded microcontroller in it?

Yes zadow released the s19 files. They are for transferring info to a motorolla chip. They are somewhat encrypted to use that loosely. Pretty sure zadow has gotten thrpugh that by now wink. But th. t is just part of it. That code is on the front page in op

In semi related news, Mr DHL just dropped off a JB2USb to my door.
Tomorrow the fun begins on my side

Yes it would have been tonight - sadly I must goto the salt mines first to feed my family
