I have a 1TB external harddrive. Do I just copy the CFW file onto it, plug it into my PS3, and just copy it into the PS3? That would be a breath of fresh air if that's all I have to do.

My advice would be stay on 3.55 if you want homebrew/warez, and update if you *really* have to play online. Just remember, it's a one-way street for now, and as console die off, CFW PS3s are getting more scarce. But the most important thing, and I cannot stress this enough: DON'T buy a true blue dongle. The people behind that are slimey opportunistic sh*tbags who are killing this scene.
I think I'll just buy a separate PS3 if that's the case. And just use it for all my online needs.

Yep, pretty much. Download your CFW of choice (I'd suggest KMEAW 3.55, it is very stable and works with MultiMan very well) put it on a fat32 USB drive in the folder /PS3/UPDATE/ and either do a normal update from XMB or if it complains, go to recovery menu and select System Software Update. You can enter recovery by (from power off) press and hold the power button until the machine shuts back off (beep... beep... off) then press and hold again till you hear a double beep (beep... beep... beepbeep)

Dang... I don't think I have a FAT32 usb drive. Just an external hard drive. I'll need to order one. Where you do get your games? With Megaupload and other sites gone, getting PS3 iso files seems like a maze.

You can use the external HDD, but it must be fat32. Windows won't let you format anything over I think 128GB as fat32, but do a google search for "guiformat.exe"

Can't help you out on the warez thing though, sorry.

Thanks svenmullet and Adamsville for your help. Figured out how to reformat my 1TB drive to FAT32 with my Mac. Downloading kmeaw's 3.55 CFW right now and will see if this works. Just need to find a game to download and I'll be in business. Again, thanks for you guy's help.
