The firmware will be untouched but you will have to reintall the backup manager.

Just remove old hd, pop in new hd and the ps3 will format it.

Not sure about this because m PS3 asked to install FW since it didn't recognize the one I had when it first booted right after installing my new hdd. So I had rebug ready and pressed start+select and everything worked I just had to rename the rebug CFW to ps3updat.pup all captial and was set.

No need to apologize man.

What I did is, I did a backup first, which you can find under System settings in PS3. After it's done I switched off PS3, removed all cables, replaced HDD, plug in all cables again, switch on PS3, then it said in the words of the system FW cannot be recognized and need to press start+select to install one. I had an external hdd ready and plugged in anyway, so I used it. You can use a usb stick too if you like. Make sure you have the CFW ready on your external.

For this you will have to create a folder on the root of the drive called PS3, create another folder in the PS3 folder called UPDATE, and in this folder you should have your CFW ready, whether it is Kmeaw or Rebug or whatever. Make sure the CFW is renamed to "PS3UPDAT.PUP", .PUP being the extension of course.

When this is done, just plug it in your PS3 and press start+select if it tells you to. In case it doesn't, it would say that it needs to format the hdd etc. So you just follow whatever it gives you.

If after formatting it takes you through setting up your ps3 etc then logs in your account, you'll have to install your CFW through recovery. Which is easy.

Here are a couple clips to help you as well:

This for swapping hdds and formatting.

This shows how you install your CFW.

Hope this helps

If you have a nand model, you will not have to reinstall firmware.

If you have a nor model, you will have to reinstall firmware.

1/2tb drives will fit into a SATA Station?

This one specifically (mine):
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/All-1-HDD...item4601a8427c

1 more thing:

Rumour has it once a HDD has been formatted to a PS3 HDD, it cannot be reformatted for use on another device, this true?
