I just picked up a slim ps3 for $150 and it is running 3.70.

I tried to connect to PSN and it wants to update to 4.11.

I am interested in getting True Blue at some point. And wanna keep my system at a state to mod it later

Things I want to find out
-stay on 3.70 and access psn (willing to update if it won't affect other stuff i have below)

- want to run backups off the hd while disconnected from the Internet... i have 2 banned 360's and don't wanna add a ps3 by playing backups online. Wife would kill me lol

- so pretty much wanna be legit when on psn and do my non sony approved safely offline.

Can someone point me in the right directions on these topics? And if i really needed a dongle to do any of this.

since you have a slim, you should just to OFW. it's too much hassle to downgrade your console. you can't hack it now without certain hardware. if you really want the ps3 hacked, you'll have to kick out more money.

don't worry about backups, just go legit. you can do pretty much everything on OFW that you can on CFW. retro games, whole ps3 games, ps1 and ps2 games can be purchased from PSN. you'll also get the most out of newer games because you can play them online.

You cannot play online. With CFW, since you are on 3.70. You have to downgrade.

Say I update to 4.11. And excuse my lack of knowledge of what's all out there , are there any homebrew apps or anything that I can load on that firmware that will give me extra stuff or be beneficial and further my experience?

OFW does not allow homebrew full stop.

You may be able to get things from the Sony store, but that is not homebrew.

nope. on OFW 4.11 you lose the capability for all homebrew at the time being.

thing is, you're not really missing out on that much with CFW. Showtime media player is great, sure, but many people like to play ps3 games on their ps3. You can always convert whatever video you want to watch, or find the compatible format to stream or watch the regular way.

IMO, you shouldn't buy a flasher, then buy a USB device just to play games at less than their full potential. If you had the old PS3 i'd say get a Cobra or use one of the free alternatives. Some may disagree with me saying that slim ps3s are better off with OFW, but from my perspective...there's really no point.

OK.. Say I do decide to put some money into this and downgrade it so I can run backups off a hard drive and run homebrew is there something I can do to make sure that I do not get banned?

If you update like @Wolfie708 said and @riddleofthejynx You lose all chances of use Hombrew in 4.11 OFW.
Now if you want to play in PSN stay in OFW and do the update, if not use a flasher to downgrade and use CFW.

@Androider4Life Stay on OFW then if you don't want to get banned. But you miss too much things not going with an CFW or just downgrading.
