ps3 no internet connections and wont update from 4.0

Hi Guys could any of you give me some hints on how to get my friends ps3 working again.History Is,
bought from Ebay needing an new laser (ya right if only)
I have replaced laser but still wont read discs, doesnt even search for a disc ( suspect switched drive)
I decided to try safe mode file recovery just to see if it helps but controller wont connect via usb so thats a no go.
Then I thought I'd update from 4.0 to 4.11 to see if that will help, (99% error) so I try 4.10 (99% error) So now I am performing a full restore to see if that makes any difference, I don't think it will but can anyone come up with an other idea other than bin it.

Also can anyone point me to a 4.0 firmware download I cant find it in the download section.

thanks guys

Don't you have to remarry your new Blu-Ray drive in order to make it usable in your PS3? (not sure though, I've never done it myself).

Thanks Hellsing9 that's what I'm after but now the ps3 wont find it on the usb stick, this console is getting stranger. I've just done a full system restore over night, connected the controller via usb and tried to reinstall 4.0 that way, like I said doesn't recognise the usb now and still can't access safe mode because it doesn't do anything when I press the ps button. any other Ideas Peoples???

@Olliedog check well again the USB stick format it and pass the update to PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP
Format it on fat32, and then pass it over again the .pup file. See if anything happens.
The link i passed you is CEX = Retail version. Maybe you wanna try 4.11.

I have tried 4.10 and 4.11 both get to 99% and error, I have also double checked the USB ie format and recreate folders so I know it's not that. I think I'm going to put this down as a lost cause because everything I would normally try has failed at turned up more issues.

I do some research and maybe your HDD is the problem, try to format it again or try format the HDD drive outside the ps3 (pc).

All the loops that are you suffering maybe (soon) to be dead ps3 or bad HDD.

I put a 120gb in last night and that hasn't worked so I'm formatting the original 40gb now on the pc to see if that makes any difference. I'll keep you posted. And thanks again for your help.
