The YLOD means that the little soldered parts on your PS3 got too hot and cracked. The cause of this is stupidity on Sony's part... There's this paste on the processor that, if applied correctly, will prevent it from overheating. Well, they put it on wrong. Maybe on purpose, to get our money. Anyways, to avoid that, I recommend having your PS3 in a nicely ventilated area, and giving it a break every so often when playing.
Also, if you have a Slim, the paste was put on better, so you don't need to worry

Not to be a stickler but this is incorrect. The paste is a countermeasure for the fan. Look at how many laptops sony makes that use thermal paste? No, the problem lies in the fact that lead free solder was used in soldering the gpu and cpu. Which is great for high heat, but on the contrary has a very, very low threshold for rapid temperature change. So....it goes like this...PS3 heats up cools down, heats up cools down, heats up cools down. Same as most anything u heat up with extreme heat and then let it cool...It's gonna warp, crack, shift, etc....

That is a great explanation of 1 cause for the ylod.

But it is not the only cause. See here.

This is a mixture of things that were did wrong, the fan, the paste and the solder they used was lead free and that didn't help. But again all major systems use lead free. Ps3, xbox360 and the wii. The fixed it one can upgrade the fan, change the paste and reball the system. One last thing that many people don't do and that is change power supply. Thanks

U could whip out money for these kinds of mods, no doubt. But the bottom line is. It's still gonna heat up, and it's still gonna cool down. There is no way around this. In turn stirring up the same issue (lead free solder) but just prolonging it a little. Honestly, if i were u. Just leave it on. Just leave ur ps3 runnin. That and cleaning it is about the only (free) preventative measure u can do unless u wanna go have a reball done with lead solder. But i would just wait. And about the other systems like xbox360?? Really? If u look at stats, in the first four years microsoft had to exchange nearly 40% of their inventory. So, yea u can compare these two units as that's about the just of it.

It's gonna. It's just the way it is. I mean, graphics cards go out on computers all the time. But, it's an easy swap so no one bit***s. Now being that the cpu and gpu are integral on the ps3. There's alot more risk involved. Now, every three years (probably less) u will wanna change the thermal paste and pads as well as do a good internal cleaning. I mean, it's just the environment and stress. It's not like it can't be fixed. It's just not convenient. And if u send it to sony, they are gonna update it. But, in long terms short, yes it's gonna break with use but then again what doesn't?

Edit: oops, being caught up in discussion i forgot to say. 1.) hold the eject button for 10 seconds and do a fan test(for g01 models or later), that will tell u if the ylod is because of power supply. If the fan turns on, power supply=good. if power supply=good? then try and get into recovery and sync the controller(even if nothing shows on the screen). When u hear those last beeps and let go, just wait like 30 seconds then try and sync the controller. if controller=synced? then it is a software issue. if controller=not synced? it is most likely the problem i described.
