Restore BD playback on NAND questions/theory
So here's the deal, I picked up a CECHA01 PS3 a while back with intentions of downgrading it. It was on 3.61 fw. I had no way of backing up the DRL files, and didn't remember to play a new bluray title to update the drives HRL to restore bluray playback after the downgrade (wish I had remembered, oh well).
So, i downgraded the ps3 no problem and of course lost bluray playback. I have tried all the usual methods to try to restore, but of course none have worked. I have no idea what bluray's were played on this ps3 before i got it. Nor ps3's don't have the same problem as nand ps3's because they don't properly check the DRL/HRL files, or so I've read. They do still create DRL files though...which match the newest bluray titles played on the bluray drive. So my question/theory is this: If I pull the bluray drive out of my nand based ps3, install/remarry it in my nor based ps3, play a new bluray title (newer than what the drive would have played, to update the drive's HRL) then back up the DRL files from the nor ps3, reinstall/remarry the drive back into the nand ps3, then restore the DRL files from the nor ps3 to the nand ps3, this should work right? I'm not sure if anyone has actually tried this or not, but I'm going to, and I'll report back with what I find. IF it works it may be a way to restore bluray playback for the handful of people with nand ps3's that lost playback and can't get it back. Thoughts or comments anyone? |

Seriously?
You answered your own question before you asked it. "Nor ps3's don't have the same problem as nand ps3's because they don't properly check the DRL/HRL files, or so I've read. They do still create DRL files though...which match the newest bluray titles played on the bluray drive." A NOR PS3 does not update the drive HRL - It always stays at V1 (and not even a real V1) It does indeed create new DRL files - pointess if the HRL is never changed to match it though. What it does update though is the AACS keys. You COULD use my later method if you are very hardware competent: Downgrade to 3.15 and stay in FSM Remove the MX25 from the drive board Read the contents with an SPI flasher Erase from 0xE000 to the end of file Reflash that file back to the MX25 Put it back on Update the firmware with a BD movie in the drive With a disc in the drive, and updating the FW: Lv2diag checks if it has a higher version then the MX (well 1 is higher then 0) = true Then it looks at the disc to see if it has anything. Disc has a higher version then 1 Ok, use the disc HRL and update AACS keys. Lv2diag (V1) ===> Drive (V0) ===> Disc (Higher then V1 - use it) IF you have not wiped the section of the MX25, then: Lv2diag looks at the HRL on the MX25 Whatever is there is higher or equal to V1 Skip and continue with FW update. Lv2diag (V1) ===> Drive (V1 or higher) ===> skip HRL and continue |

Ahh, I didn't know nor ps3's didn't update the HRL. I thought they did, but just skipped the DRL/HRL security check. Thanks for the info.
