DTS AND DD audio over optical?

ok im buying a ps3 im getting a good deal on a old fat 80gb model, now i have an old home theater that is DTS and Dolby Digital, now i want to connect the ps3 to my tv via HDMI and have the audio go to my receiver (dts or dd) now i know the new slim bitstreams the audio over the optical and the theater would just use the dts core from say dts master audio but the old ps3 phat doesnt bitsream. my question is would the old phat 80 give me dts audio from games and blu ray movies via optical or do i need the new slim ?

It would work over optical, just change the audio settings to run through the optical.
To be clear you are running a HDMI between your PS3 and Tv for Video and then an Optical between your PS3 and Home Theatre for audio - There should be a HDMI, AV, Optical and Ethernet port at the back of the PS3 if I stand corrected

My slim does that (I got it in 2010), not sure if the phat does that also but i'm pretty sure that it does. There's no reason why it shouldn't

It'll work with a phat too. I had a phat for a year, connected via optical to a 5.1 DTS Home Cinema, and it worked flawless, both for games and BR movies. You'll just have to check the right audio settings, as someone else already told you, (audio through optical instead of HDMI), and uncheck the audio formats your home cinema can't handle (mine can't handle PCM for instance, but if you have only Dolby Surround and DTS that's fine, the PS3 will convert the audio stream for you...).

@Adventfred check this = click

The fat ps3s can't bitstream hd audio. You want to set it to LPCM and let the ps3 decode the hd audio. Your receiver will then read PCM. The only way to have the receiver say Dolby TrueHD is to bitstream TrueHD to it from a compatible source, like the Slim ps3.
