exFAT ?

do you think the ps3 would ever be able to store files over 4gb ?
why do you think theres that artificial prevention of >4gb files ?

A quick question Can the ps3 play mkv files without conversion ?

The PS3 CAN store files over 4GB on internal, the limitation is only set to external devices, which have to be formatted to FAT32

Regarding MKV, if you install PS3 Media Server, you will be able to stream MKV's, they will not play natively on the PS3's XMB, so:

A.) You need to stream
B.) You need a Jailbroken PS3 and install Showtime.

As my beloved Greg said (no homo), the PS3 can store files over 4GB on the internal disk, so the issue is not that it cant handle it.

The PS3 on its internal harddisk, where it stores all its ****, uses a proprietary file system that supports files over 4GB's.
There is no "artificial" prevention set up by Sony, to prevent the PS3 to handle files over 4GB.
The reason the PS3 is not able to access files over 4GB on an external drive, is because the operating system on the PS3 only supports external drives formatted as FAT32. (<-- might be wrong on the only part, perphaps it supports FAT16/FAT also, dno). It won't recognize any drives that doesn't has a filesystem formatted with FAT32, it won't be able to read the files on it
The technical limit here is with FAT32. The FAT32 file system is only able to support files with a maximum size of 4GB(more exactly FAT32 can handle files up to a size of 4294967296bytes -> 4194304kilobytes -> 4096megabytes).

The reason for the "32" in FAT32, is because to access the different addresses of a individual file, it uses an integer that can take either the values 0 or 1 (=it's in binary), and its 32 digits long.. 2^32 = 4294967296, which was the maximum size in bytes the file system could support.

Now, the reason the PS3 most likely doesn't support NTFS, which I believe is what most of us would want it to support, is because NTFS isn't a free filesystem. It is owned by microsoft, so if you decide to use their filesystem, you would have to pay to/license it from Microsoft. That is the reason why most external harddisks you buy, is also formatted with FAT32 from the factory, even though its retarded with its 4GB file size limit. Because, the user can then himself format it to NTFS and money is saved.

use handbrake from handbrake.fr

Preset: HighProfile, change audio from Dolby something II to 6-channel discrete, turn off the checkbox for large file.

First of all NTFS is pretty much undocumented (unlike FAT32), and was developed for the NT systems (millenium/2000 if i recall correctly and up to windows 7). I have no ****ing idea, why they won't implement support for EXT2/3/4, it's almost like they WANT to limit us, or are too lazy to implement more than one filesystem. Also windows should support it too, but ****ing why, when there's no money in it for microsoft?

The internal HDD of the PS3 can hold big files, I have Planet Earth and Life on the internal drive and each m2ts file is about 9 GB

EXT filesystems are not common outside of the linux community. FAT is the most common file format available at this time and is freely documented this is why it is most commonly used on devices like this.

Of course, They could be complete *******s and force you to either use only 16gb of an external drive, buy their own over-expensive add-on hard drive. But if they did that, I would have to by myself another console.
