No, it’s when you have more FAT than first expected; extended FAT it’s called: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT

There is a simplie solution for this: patch isolated module to enable supported filesystems also on external, that are normally only allowed on internal (so more then your average FAT12/16/32 but also UFS/UDF/EXT2). -> then use ufs2 *whatever your fetish* on external and you can store files in the PS3 native supported filestructure.

EXfat is not FatX is not UFS1 is not UFS1.5 is not UFS2 is not EXT2/3/4 etc.

Of course, They could be complete *******s and force you to either use only 16gb of an external drive, buy their own over-expensive add-on hard drive. But if they did that, I would have to by myself another console.
Blah blah blag FAT32 can not hold files larger in size than 4.2GB. FAT32 is only documented due to its MASS storage standard, exFAT for example is not THAT well documented and is still a closed format that not many people have experience with.

The ideal format for external HDDs on the PS3 would probably be EXT2 as it has not overhead and it’s mountable( with some effort ) in Windows, Mac and Linux. The smallest file size limit of the EXT2 filesystem is 16GB, but it could also be formatted to make the smallest file size limit 256GB. Also EXT2 has e2defrag, EXT3 does not.

Ext3 fs does not need defragging due to how it works. Fragmentation is either too insignificant or just doesn't happen. Same with ext4. Not sure about ext2...

exFAT is not documented publicly because it is a proprietary format, you need to license it from Microsoft.
