Question Can you swap slim and phat hard drives?

I am wondering if I can take a 120gb hd from a slim and put it in to a 60gb phat without any interruption and then put the 60gb hd in the slim. If I can, will gamestop take the slim with a phat 60gb hd? I have a slim 120gb right now and want backwards compatibility in the phat. Also, is there any "homemade" way to connect a ps2 memory card to a ps3? I know they make adapters, but hey, I'm a cheapo. Thanks.

to my understanding the slim uses the hard drive to store the operating system so removing it is removing part of the OS, so no you'd loose all your stuff.
as for the ps2 mem on the ps3 i dont know

Yeah, slim indeed does use hard drive space for SOME of system files. Rest is in NOR chip, so you can safely swap those drives. Only thing is, you will need to format it, in order to use it, and then apply the same system update as you had before (on slim). On phat you will need to format too, since files on drive are encrypted with key of whatever ps3 was using it.

Ps3 hdd's are encrypted. There is nothing you can do with a ps3 hdd that is not in the ps3 it is formatted for period.

The only way to decrypt a ps3 hdd is if you do it via otheros in 3.55 cfw.

Won't work, you put it in a different ps3 it'll require a format to use.

I came across another thread that mentioned:
Even without a PS3, Graf_Chokolo has updated his PS3 linux. In the latest update he has managed to disable the PS3 HDD encryption, meaning that you are able to use your HDD in multiple PS3 consoles without format. Tools are available VIA Git below.
Thread is here: http://www.ps3hax.net/2011/03/ps3-in...-graf_chokolo/
