Heavy Rain dev fine with 'another five years' of PS3
An interesting article with some toughts about Gaming Industry from Heavy rain developer; David Cage:
![]() With next-gen console rumors at an all-time high, Heavy Rain director David Cage is quite content with the current PlayStation 3. "To be honest, I’m not that interested in technology or the next generation of consoles," Cage said in an interview with Develop. "If we could continue with PlayStation 3 for another five years it would be fine with me." Unlike the majority of people who think new tech would result in better games, Cage believes games should evolve through creative ideas. He feels the lack of creativity is what is limiting the current generation of gaming. "I think the main challenges are on the creative side than on the technical side," Cage explained. "Are there technical things I can’t do on PS3? Honestly, no. The limitation is much more about the ideas we have. When you look at the past, you realized that the technology evolved must faster than the concepts we rely on." "As an industry we have pretty much have been building the same games for fifty years, despite the platforms changing," he said matter-of-factly. "So, what do I expect from the next generation of hardware? You know, the usual. More polys, and higher resolution texture maps, and, horsepower, and, stuff. Wow. It’s so cool and exciting." That sparks a pretty interesting debate. Is technology hampering new ideas from becoming a reality? Will a more powerful processor result in a different form of gameplay? Cage is right in that the core mechanics of games haven't really changed that much over the years. You still have your generic first person shooters, your third-person cover-based shooters, etc. Sure, the graphics can always improve, but as we learned with Journey, sometimes a really innovative idea can triumph pretty graphics. Ideas are what sell. Final tought: You can play even with the most low or primitive graphics and have fun as well, the problem is that with all this innovations in developing tech, better game engines and better consoles. *Fun* most of the times do not enter in the equation, you can have a great piece of hardware but if the idea is watered down or there's no idea at all on the concept of the game, it end being an obsolete product. Pretty much defines the game industry nowadays = Eyecandy. Source = Gameinformer

I've been trying to say pretty much this for a while now. Lets take some classic games:
Crash Bandicoot, The original Sonic The Hedgehog. Both of these games, compared to "modern" graphics look absolutely sh*t. But it doesn't bother me, I still play them regardless. Why? Because it's fun... A lot of games have lost the "fun" factor and have became "the same old thing". There has not been much variation this generation at all. Or maybe I'm just too old.. because I played those classic games when they was "new" and "cool"... |

Spot on in my opinion.
It's great to have fantastic graphics, but if the game is the same old same old, then I would much rather play Sonic or even Jet-Set Willy lol |

right, right and right. it just bites everyone wants the newest thing. i mean, look at phones. people seem to buy a new phone every other month...
he is just so right that people need to get creative and, crazy, you were right pointing out a psx game. I mean, that generation had some limitations, but some of the most creative ideas and games of all time in my opinion. That also kinda seemed like the last generation where each console kinda had their own way of doing things. consoles now are like all the same with the wii kinda still stuck in last generation; it has some innovations but beyond first party games, nothing really sticks out in my mind. There's no way i'm too old and i agree with you @CrazyLinuxNerd . I'm only 20 right now but i still mainly mash on psx games cause, well, that was my generation of games growing up and now i can finally really play and not just be a kid mashing on games and not really getting past the first level. Motion didn't change up gaming quite like 3D and i'm not sure if that's exactly where gaming should go because as much as i like it, i do prefer motion games (move) where i can sit down and use it. I mean, is motion gaming gonna be next kinda like how sony and nintendo pretty much did away with 2d gaming? I really doubt it, cause if obesity still exists, i don't think kids wanna stand. When i see people playing wii games, most of the time it's the gesture based ones so they can just sit. Well, the ones where you stand seem to be more with you playing with friends and not exactly by yourself, e.g. bowling, archery, boxing, etc. I mean, i loved inFamous: Festival of Blood cause i could sit and use the move at the same time and that was great. Games where you have to stand can really immerse you but at the same time, exhausts you quite a bit. Motion gaming on the console is great when it's like a mouse for me. The difference is though that the screen can stay still and you move the cursor all around and i think that's way more effective than a controller. Hmm...i think i'll wait for a response before adding more to this post so i can make another post :P Enjoy this essay :P Last edited by JOshISPoser; 05-19-2012 at 02:02 PM. Reason: added thoughts on where gaming is going (motion) |

A perfect example of that "same old thing" are the assassin's creed games... i mean, there's 4 (or 3, dont remember) games with exactly the same gameplay, they just change the setting. I'm tired of **** like this. They need to bring back the fun into gaming. and don't worry mate, i played sonic when it was new too. We're not old, just experienced =P

Im fine with the ps3, i donīt what the ps4 come next year, we have great games in this generation i think itīs too soon to have another console or more "graphics".
Imo ps3 deserves more 3 years of life, then the ps4 can came in. I think the majority of the people cares too much about the graphics.

You want same games, check out madden! Those games have the same flaws every single game. At least assassin's creed had some fixes, the only thing madden changes up is the rosters, but i think that's cause they have to :P
I think for like 4 or 5 straight years, you could direct snap to the wide receiver. It pisses me off madden has the contract for those games and people still buy it year after year...it was my least favorite football game and of course it was the one to buy the contract. CoD seems to be the same game every year. yearly games seem to blow. Crash Bandicoot (always a perfect example of good games :D) would change gameplay, fix gameplay every release. Add new things, etc. The tony hawk franchise rocked it for a while until thug 2 came out and it was pretty much the same game. I thought proving ground finally changed it up and made things better but then, you know, they made a game that sold like 5000 copies. |

lack of creativity and lack of new things in video games is actually the problem.

Facebook is proofing the same thing.... A simple friends network with some lame farm games is worth lots more as $ony with a banking network, several hardware divisions and a great console with great games .... the world is going crazy these days
![]() Maybe we should ask Bono to invest $ 90 million in a new kind of game
