The riddle of PS2 Backups on slims by Cobra - Theory

Lately something has been bugging my head which i always wanted to know:

How the hell does Cobra manage to load PS2 DVDs (real ones) on slims?

After thorough thinking and looking at the possibilities i can see only one way (to my knowledge) of this happening: they're somehow loading a set of selfs from a firmware OLDER than 2.70 and making them compatible with their CFW.

And why do i think this? Well, there's three points to consider:

1st point -> http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=34059 <- this thread here. The records state that the user was able to play ps2 games on a non BC phat after downgrading to 2.50 (and doing additional stuff which wasn't really needed as pointed by @svenmullet ) WITH video proof

2nd point -> the statements of sven himself which claim that the latest firmware that he was able to test for ps2 backwards compatibility was 2.60

and finally the 3rd point -> the VERY FIRST slim model, aka 120 GB model, has minverchk of 2.70 FW... now THAT is odd, don't you guys think?

so, here are my considerations:

* assuming that there's a cfw loader (which only works on the same firmware) , i suppose we can try making an ofw loader and test specifically 2.60 on a slim ps3... unfortunately, i don't know what'll our dear friend Syscon think of this...

* we could resign the files that we need from 2.60 to 3.55. problem is, we don't know which ones are the "golden files" that allow us to get ps2 games working

suggestions and ideas would be highly appreciated thank you

Yes u are right zex.. me and zadow was talking about this one nifht or matbe japsander. But basical.. l they took the files off a bc console non hardware emu and Rediff the files.. all gets loaded to devflash i believe.. either need usb analyzer or crack it open... Meaning dump the flash/ coreos and start looking for unencrypted files.. now thar the tools are available to peons.. ie public.. just joking around there...

Start with that... First u need xobra dongle

psp games works also with cobra i think... maybe they emulate the psp so the ps3 thinks the psp is plugged in and plays the game.

mcmrc1 yes that is maybe i was talking to someone about... many possibilites to use the psp and open up the ps3. ie network play(remote play( keys))... as ps3jig... etc etc i can go on and on.. to expensive hardware for me to buy and do and dont have access to... some one on the psp side of things needs to collab over this way a lil i think...

/start rant
tell you the truth out of these two dongles the cobra is more harmful to the free scene then tb. look at all these badass features they have. that sony should have... tb is just "newer" games that are given to you at their disposal. more worried about "security" and getting that bottom dollar by even trying to control the "clone" market(if it aint them in one big scheme(also if they make cobra)). I do condone piracy to a certain extent (if i want it ill pay for it or save up for it or "demo" it)but tb takes it a lil to far. oh by charging for it. its just new games and also somewhat major prevalance to a "scene". i do undestand its only 60 bucks = 1 new retail game. Why not be a release group and take anonymous credit for it ( i do believe in getting paid for your work, but this aint work...) be like Centropy or l33t-irc back in the day. **** that got respect. and respect was given back **** that was earned. I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT BOTH OF THESE if it was for nintendo or sega. you know old school ****. to be honest if i didnt have a pristine 3.15 fat launch 60gb (for testing ****) and also other ways to play ps1 not ps2 because well i just stopped playing games even before that console was out, id buy one but with its have to be a lil different, ie 3.15 fw so i can still retain "offcial Sony Features", which are now gone... jeesh..also a non cobra cfw... would love a dual firmware boot... (rant with in rant).
/end main rant

/continues slightly but somewhat back ontopic
i would love to actually get my hands on a cobra and see what i can do with it personally and would love to crack that ***** wide open and release those features for everyone. i dont want to support them with all my hard earned money.( donations can be accepted here if someone wants to set it up hell 20 people a buck each) im a cheap ass now. But i gurantee you this. who ever does it first though will be like a "big name" dev in the "scene" like graf geo kaka. i aint going to name them all. props to all. but you will be killing 2 birds 1 stone... 1. taking out profit dongle . and 2. showing sony up on releasing new and wanted features to the public that sony cant even handle themselves.

and im spent

peace

just unself all ps2 emu files from previous versions, rename them, code a selector menu and resign those files bundled up into one single package. have fun finding out...

the problem is it may not be as "simple" as that sounds, because it may not be ONLY the ps2emu that's allowing to play ps2 games on non bc phats. it may be another self which has access to the internals of the ps3 and which might "know" if we're dealing with a phat or a slim.

i like to think of this as a transactional phase:

Sony builds up FAT ps3s with BC and OtherOS

Sony decides it's time to remove BC by Hardware but still keeps the software emulation

Sony "removes" the software emulation (this happens with non BC phats, they just basically put 2.70 FW and onwards on them, but you can still play if you have a downgrade method)

Sony moves to slims and, with minimal version check, it definitely forbiddens the comon user of downgrading and allowing himself to play ps2 games

Piracy happens and with it comes Cobra, which in turn, finds out how to bring back what was once ours

Sony patches Cobra on their latest firmwares (this was told on Demonhades, though i personally believe it DID happen)

Sony decides to use Cobra's knowledge to make money out of it and decide to implement PS2 Classics... so more money to their pockets i guess (My assumption, but feel free to correct me if i'm wrong)

I have to ask: how well does PS2 playback work on a non-BC PS3 (using Cobra)? My PS3 natively supports PS2 games so I'm not sure how my experience with Cobra would differ from that of someone playing on a slim.

Poorly.

Originally the only models compatible were the original launch models which had both the Emotion Engine (CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (GPU) from the PS2 hardware and had very good compatibility. The CPU was removed in later models and compatibility was still good, but not great.

The PS2 hardware was then further removed all-together from later models (including the slims), I am not sure where the full software emulation came about but no PS3 officially supported it, the compatibility is very poor, it appears they reached a stalling point with the GPU emulator which may have hit the upper bounds of the PS3's capabilities and thus was not implemented as a feature on these consoles.
