Is this an observation of the Cobra's performance, or the general state of PS2 emulation?

To my knowledge no PS3s, apart from those sold by Sony as having backward compatibility, have attained backward compatibility as the result of hacking. The exception to this would be the Cobra dongle which, purportedly, allows for PS2 play on previously non-BC systems.

So when you say "poorly" are saying you referring to the Cobra's performance in emulating PS2 games?

i don't think he's referring to cobra's performance. i think they're using whatever emulator is in all ps3 firmwares for ps2 games and since the slims and stuff have like no hardware for it, it just isn't that good to play ps2 games; as in, it's probably the best you'll get without like a dev made emulator or the emulator in the ps3 getting modified.

And yet PS2 Classics run just fine on slims...

i think the ps2 classics have an emu built into the disc. I could be completely wrong on that though...

Ps2 classics aren't on disks, so they are run like a regular game/demo

Right, they're going to spend countless hours tweaking an emu to run for a specific title, then sell that title on the PS Store for... ten bucks? I call BS on Sony. They have a working software emu, but choose to capitalize on the users instead of including it in FW so we can play our old PS2 discs.

I thought he was referring to like the MGS HD collection and whatnot, my bad.

Well, isn't that how Wii does the n64 titles, individual emulators per game?

It's an observation of the dongles performance. I don't know for sure but I am told the software GPU emulator comes from PS2 classics titles. It is probably only tuned for a very specific range of titles and doesn't implement all of the GS functionality.

Full hardware PS2 emulation is your best choice at this stage, If you really value your PS2 games I suggest keeping your PS2.

Years ago, I somewhat suspected that Sony removed the PS2 backward compatibility from the PS3 so that they could create a new market between original PS2 users and PS3 newcomers: a Playstation 2.5, if you will. The idea here would be to create a system which played PS2 games but contained hardware which upscaled the image to 1080p (and had an HDMI output).

Obviously, I was mistaken as no such system ever surfaced.

In a way, I'm disappointed: as much as a PS2.5 would have seemed like an unnecessary console, I can't help but think that it would have been better than reselling users their old PS2 titles in the form of downloads. Additionally, the creation of such an intermediary console would have made a nice swan song for the PS1 and PS2 which so dominated the video game industry in their respective generations: give them a high-def funeral, and then let the PS3 be just about new titles.

Once again, for better or worse, it never happened.

ofcourse the redistributed PSN titles are highly optimised/reduced so that they will NOT have problems in the software emulator

which is why they are stricly speaking not PS2 titles anymore, but PS3/PSN hybrids.
