Please help. I opened up my ps3 to remove dust/filth, but when i put it all back together, this loud fan noise started! And please don't say that i put it back together wrong!

Usually when the fan speeds up it means that the machine is getting hot. Is the system running hot, is it hot on the outside when u touch it? You must of done something without knowing it when u opened it, the heat sensor could of got damaged. I don't really know I wasn't there.

No its not damaged you should try re applying the thermal paste and that should fix your problem search youtube there are alot of videos

When he took it apart he must removed the heat sinks, on my phat u have to remove them to get to the fan. I didn't think of that. Hope the thermal paste works and the process is fairly simple.

when I turn it on, you can barely hear the fan, then after like 30 seconds it becomes louder and blows out somewhat warm air. Where and what do the heat sinks look like? Please post a pic. I have heard of the thermal paste method but I didn't mess with the sensors. The thermal paste did look a little worn out! it is a phat cheche1 ps3 so its pretty old.

I don't have a pic of the heat sinks, but the links are two pics that may help you identify them. they are the metal things that sit on top of cpu and gpu. You can't miss them. You said that the paste looked dried out the paste goes in between the heat sinks and chips so I had to seen them. It sounds like it is getting hot and the fan then speeds up as a result.

Go to Radioshack and buy some Artic Silver thermal compound, And some 70-90% Alcohol (Cleaning not Drinking Alcohol :P) From Walmart (Store), And clean the old thermal paste off of the CPU and GPU (Using the Alcohol)
Clean it off the Heatsinks too, then apply the Artic Silver in a nice even layer on the CPU and GPU.
Reassemble, ????, Profit.

Personally I would NEVER use silver based conductive paste in a device that is known/prone to leak it on the motherboard when standing vertical.

My advice: use Arctic MX4, it is non metallic, has a high lifetime, good conductivity, works great and does not give you problems if it ever leaks.
