I actually agree with
@euss
. Its better not using conductive paste in case you spill or mess up like i did the first time putting to much! It squashed out when i closed it, so i had to re-open and clean up. Bottom line is not to attempt fixes when you are drunk

You have to know I have even seen the original paste that Sony / Asus puts on it leak on the motherboard. It has good reason that I state not to use metal based. The differences between silver and carbon based are minimal, although carbon has a higher lifespan as it bonds more to the electrolytes.
Also, because I work with very extreme cooling in alot of cases (e.g. Vapochill with double stage compressor for extreme cooling in the -30'C to 4'C range) I have to be very picky about my conductive paste, because it will be used 50 times beyond designed specifications. So in my 40+ years of experience I end up with the slogun: "what is good enough for NASA in outerspace /might/ be good enough for me". Back to PS3: not only the paste on top of the heatspreader is drying over time, but also underneath it. Although I would not recommend it to everyone, the daring people with enough experience might even replace the paste underneath (RSX comes off quite easily when warmed a little, the CellBE is glued U-shaped, there are some pictures of it on PS3devwiki.com on the CellBE page). Ofcourse when you want to replace that, you obviously cannot use silverbased, only carbon based e.g Arctic MX4.

This is not a pissing contest of silver vs nonsilver (there are boards that JUST do that, discuss 1/50th of a degree difference that gets won by marmite and toothpaste LMAO), if you want to use Silver, by all means do, just spare me the crying (or requotes how wrong I am) etc. I have done my homework ages ago, far beyond normal limits.
As to guides: there are million of guides, half of them wrong too, but with consoles in total using 1/9th of what my CPU alone has too evaporate, it is like improving a tricycle by putting rubberbands on the tires.

just put a thin line down the middle of the heatspeaders (the top of the cpu and gpu), a dot in the middle will also work, or spreading very thin layer with a razor blade, it's hard to go wrong putting thermal paste on unless you use to much.
