Actually maternity leave is covered under the FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act), at least it is here in New Jersey... the problem is that people don't know enough about these benefits.

It says alot about **** My Life Act and its nation etics if after 17 years not even their (not so) natives generally know about it, and still just for a year and a half defined what 'son and daughter' or 'caretaker' means...

I still wonder: you call it a benefit to be unpaid...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's good just that there is something there. I would imagine that you can collect unemployment, or disability benefits while on maternity leave.

In any case, I'm fully aware of how crappy this country is at taking care of the "little guy/gal". Thing that pisses me off the most is how easy they make it to be a parasite, and how difficult they make it for you to better yourself. Go and apply for foodstamps, or some stuff like that and see how quickly they approve you, now go apply for financial aid to go to college and see the run around they give you, and God forbid you attempt to buy a house... the only thing missing is a cavity inspection.

PS. not everybody that does the foodstamp, etc thing is a parasite, some people do need it, but there's a lot of a-holes that are just taking advantage of the system. I've seen a few people that get foodstamps and housing help... yet they drive model year BMWs/Acuras.

Trust me mate, it's the same in the UK. If you are a pathetic waste of space then the social services etc bend over to give you everything, but if you have worked 99% of your life they basically rape you for trying to make something of your life.
