does your mate have a pc or is it a laptop?

well if its a pc, plug the drive into a sata port,
raid or non raid it will show in the bios if its picked up.

if not picked up the hdd is
dead. (below i have wrote what to do to rma it)

if it does show up, then

download seatools dos http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/ .
then burn the iso to a cd, from there boot it up on your firends machine and test the hdd.

if it passes, then its most likely a faulty hdd caddy(enclosure).
do a full erase in seatools, it will take time.
then repartition the drive in windows from your mates pc, you fat32 formatter, it will wipe drives larger that 32gb for use on ps3.

if it failed see if you can rma it back to seagate, probably not it may say its an oem drive but you never know. http://www.seagate.com/support/warranty-and-returns/

If you have windows try rebooting your computer with it hooked up. Then go to your start icon and type in "create and format hard disk partitions". Then click on "Action" and then "rescan disks". It should show up. If your computer is reading your primary drive I can't think of any reason it wouldn't read a secondary unless the drive is dead. I've used EASUS but I prefer SwissKnife. I once killed a drive just by expanding a partition. They can be very temperamental. You really only need RAID to detect other hardware like Xbox 360 disk drives that aren't supported by your chipset. I've got ancient computers that can pick up any Sata/Pata drives I hook up to them.

you can't kill a drive from expanding a partition.

also, raid is used alot. mirrored, striped, various uses for it, not just xbox.

p.s. if a motherboard old or new has sata or ide(pata) it will pick up sata or ide, thats what the interface's are made for.

o/p stick to what i said earlier, what the bios sayes won't lie, unless ur drive is over 2.2tb, lol. which its not.
