Bypass BRD???
Ok, I have an old school 80gb ps3, backwards compatible, I believe it is a ceche01. Well I received it as a, "if you can fix it you can have it" kind of thing. Well apparently when the BRD went out, they decided to just toss it.
Don't know why people do the things they do but hey, that is the past and I now need help. So, how do I get this machine up and running? Can I just bypass the BRD with a dongle of some sort, and just use this machine as a media server? Or can I actually use a different BRD control board/drive on this machine and "re-marry" them. Keep in mind, I don't have a drive or a control board for the machine. And I cannot boot to a screen, do to not having the BRD. Someone told me to check this sight out cuz people know what they are doing here. Open to any suggestions or leads. Buy a new one is not an option, as I already have a functioning one. I just wanna throw this one in the garage. Oh, and plz. If you have a solution, that requires downloading stuff, could you plz link the safe downloads in your reply?

no drive or board
Well the machine "turns on". But of course there isn't any activity on the left hand light/ drive activity light. The power light is green, and the fans are on and everything. However the power button is unresponsive when trying to turn it off, have to turn it off from the back. I also tried going into service mode or whatever by holding the power button. Sometimes I get the beeps sometimes I do not. I cannot seem to get to any form of GUI. Not even the recovery screen, or where it tells you to plug in a controller. It does not throw a yellow or red light while on, and it does not shut down by its self. I guess I could re-flow it, but without it over heating and shutting down, I think that may do more damage than good.

You should be able to boot into XMB without a BRD. You cannot update the PS3 but except that it should work perfectly.
Did you tried both HDMI/AV?? Maybe you have a problem with the HDMI port. I don't see why you should reflow the ps3. I mean if it;s a problem then you will know (3 beeps and an amber eye). I saw that there are 2 different ways to access the recovery mode. Normally, close the ps3 (from the button behind) turn it on then press the start button the ps3 will start then it will close (keep your finger on the start button) then it will start again and after that you will hear 2 consecutive beeps (here you have to take off the finger from the start button) and you should be in the recovery mode. |

The PS3 should boot to the xmb fine, without a blue ray drive. I have a few lying around with no drives attached and they boot fine.
You should also be able to enter the recovery menu, without a bd. Your problem lies else where. Check Errors on boot. It could be a semi brick. Or it could be the GPU and CPU are not sitting flush with the heat sinks. Or the solder could be cracking under the GPU. Does the controller sink to the PS3? Do you know what firmware it is on? If it is on 3.55 or lower you could try entering factory/service mode. A Reflow may be what it needs. To tell you the truth it could be a ton a different things. But for sure not because there is no blue ray drive.

playerkp420 is right. I've booted a lot of ps3 into xmb without a BDR. You can try a reflow but I doubt it will help. If you reflow the ps3, cover the MoBo in thin foil then make an open to the CPU/GPU and reflow it with a heat gun at MAX 300c for 5/MAX 6 min. Make an extra cover for the connections between the processors! You will not do any damage to the ps3 if you do a reflow even if you don't need it. Also apply some good thermal paste, I recommend ''Electrolube'' or something that you know for sure that will do the job. I hate arctic silver... I used electrolube on yloded ps3 and they work perfectly for over an year WITHOUT a fan mode!
I really don't know what advice to give you if you said you tried both the AV and HDMI... |

You have a GLOD.
Do you see the hdd light flicker on once, when you turn it on? Does it beep when turned on? Also hold down the power button until it shuts off (the light will not flash. It will just shut off). Does it beep? Has it had a reflow previously? Some people have had luck with the "power trick" on GLOD consoles. Let it run for an hour, turn it off. Let it sit for 15 minutes then turn it back on and see what happens. If the same, repeat.....Or, leave it on over night and turn it off let it sit a few minutes then turn it back on. Usually a GLOD requires a GPU replacement. |
