Hi all, new here. My Blu ray drive on the PS3 is going bad and I decided to just get a new one (try to treat it better, not leave discs in, etc. hope for longer lasting). I'm gonna put the 320 GB HDD I have in the new one and the 160 GB new HDD in the old one. Already backed up all my stuff and ready to go, but I got to thinking that I might just jailbreak the old one instead of selling it like I planned (especially since the warranty sticker is gone and I would likely have to sell it on eBay if anywhere). Might get around to repairing the Blu ray someday since there will then be minimal risk involved, but for now I'd just use it as a totally offline emulator machine (no interest in pirating PS3 games).
So the tutorial here sounds simple enough (I softmodded my Wii with minimal effort) but I've been reading the things about not being able to downgrade from the firmwares above 3.55. So what is the situation with my old PS3 that is on firmware 4.20 (it is the PS3 from the Sports Champion Move Bundle) and will be formatting back to factory settings anyway, but with a 160 GB HDD from the new PS3 in there? Will I be able to install 3.55 on there during the reset/format? Or will it be as others have indicated more complicated than that? |

@MidgardDragon
No you will need a hardware flasher to downgrade from 4.20 back to 3.55 before you can jailbreak it.

Is there any possible way I can downgrade? There is an option in the Recovery menu that I think will put the PS3 back into the vanilla, but I'm not entirely sure that's right.
