As far as I know you can do nothing graphics wise as it's on-baord and even if it weren't the cost would not be worth it.
It will not take an i3 either. What do you mean exactly by 'flickers' as I installed Win7 on my Satellite, not same model as yours, and have had no problem. I Did do a clean wipe and install though and not an upgrade over previous versions. EDIT The fan heat problem seems quite common in them. No real biggie for me as 99% of time mine is sat on a tilt plugged into HD TV, but it has done the shut down thing in the past. |

If its not covered under warranty, go ahead and open it up and clean the fan and vents. With an older computer you might be better off with xp, as a fresh install has 16 - 18 processes vista & 7 have >30. I have an older dell that came with vista, I upgraded to 7. Then downgraded to xp for faster boot times. Although I like the cards in 7, they have a softer nicer look to them.
As for upgrades, laptops are very limited. For the most part unless your replacing with the same hardware, it can't be done. Some processors are soldered right in place so you might not be able to upgrade that as well. It would need to be the same socket, so no i3, i5 or i7. Graphics cards are non upgradable in laptops, every laptop brand configures their product different. Therefore the room/shape for the graphics card varies. Good luck, hope I was of some help |
