But casual gamers is where the money's at. Nintendo proved this with the Wii. Now, tell me why a casual gamer interested in handheld gaming would buy a 3DS/Vita? When they could easily pull out their iPhone and get a game for up to 20x cheaper and be playing in seconds. Not to mention because all the games on iPhone are... distributed digitally... iPhone owners do not need to worry about collecting a large amount of cases. Everything about iPhone gaming is attractive to casual gamers. The only thing they are losing out on is graphics and phones will catch up very quickly in graphics. Making a handheld dedicated to ONE THING like Sony and Nintendo are doing is STUPID. My cell phone, for example, can play games, movies, music, I can read books, watch live streams from Twitch.tv, I can listen to almost any type of music format including FLAC, I can hack my phone all I want without Sony (or any other company) breathing down my neck, I can use my phone as a GPS, plus there's almost an app out for anything. I can install all the custom ROMs I want. I can also play all the emulators I want. I also don't have to use ONE proprietary memory format. Look at the 3DS. All it does is play games. THAT'S IT. That's all it's good for. Same with the Vita. They do ONE THING and they're more expensive. For me, and for many casual gamers, Android/iPhone's destroy the Vita/3DS. Android devices are evolving at the rate I mentioned. For example the Galaxy S3 already has a quad core processor like the Vita. A cell phone. What do you think Android phones will be like by the end of the Vita's life span? Sorry my grammar isn't as good as I try to keep it but I'm tired and sleepy. I need to sleep...

Because seriously, I never saw a person buying a cellphone only because of the games, it's not fair comparing it to handheld gaming devices, those are exclusive to gaming, while phones have the ability to communitcate, which was the reason they were created in the first place |

We all know games are overpriced. The most recent one is Guild Wars 2. I loved GW1, but the digital copy on the standard version costs £50!!!
£50 for a PC games, I dont remember the last time I saw a PC game for that price! Sure we've got to participate in the beta and it's been great, but still way overpriced. Even PS3 and Xbox games are around £40. How can they justify that? Look at movies and blurays, those has slumped in price, blurays you can get for under £20 now! So why cant the games industry do it? A lot of shows and movies get more money from sponsorship via product placement. I posted this a few times before, but for example, Rockstar could have got McDs or Burger King to pay for advertising them instead of coming up with Burger Shot. Could also have billboards in such games and they can hire them for a week, and teh console updates the ads via the internet. This way you can get an ongoing revenue from ads in games. The fact is that the games and music and movie industry are filled with old farts who cannot be bothered to come up with new innovative ways to push their products and obtain other sources of revenue. As the article says, they are dinosaurs and if they do not change they will die out and someone else will produce something better, cheaper for the customer but bring in more money for them via other means.

An iPhone is what, $700 when it comes out? It has a yearly release cycle no less. As for games, why would I want to spend money when I could head over to Shockwave or some other flash arcade and play games for free? |

I think the point is that there are more and more free-to-play games being made. They are free to play, but come with micropayment transactions, you pay for boosts, gears characters etc. And now they make it so that if you cannot afford the items with real money, you can grind and farm for in-game currency or gold and use that to buy the same items. A little longer to get but you can get them in time.
e.g. League of Legends is very popular, but completely free to play. Guild Wars 2, you pay for the game but then no subscription fees, though you do have to buy expansions to the game. Even WoW has kindda done it, free to play, but in their case it's highly limited! cap at level 20. So I think the point is, with so many free games, why pay? Also note that cloud gaming will increase dramatically. In this case you just need to have a good internet connection, everything else is done on the companies' servers, and then the game is streamed to your PC. So people with a basic graphics card can play with high-end graphics.

Just like how smartphone games and handheld games are not the same? How can you compare those?
Smartphone games are meant as a past time in the bathroom, or maybe when your on a break in a job. Handheld games are for entertainment, when you actually want to do something to have fun.
