Keeping the Dongles around could of merely been a side effect of not sharing how to run unsigned code on higher firmwares. Due to being stuck on 3.55 and relying on Dongles to play a limited amount of games (or not playing them at all) if this DEX thing works out there will be a surge in piracy like none has seen before - something that ethical hackers don't want to be a part of. Of course, like you're comment my statement is pure speculation in response to your's.
These 'ethical hackers' didn't let their 'distaste of warez' get in the way of them obtaining debug eboots (such as Portal 2 for instance) from Sony servers for personal usage - to which they obviously have no business even connecting to, since they're not 'real licensees'. So I don't think I'll listen to any musings about 'ethical hackers' anytime soon.

Let's not talk about PSL1GHT either - for fun I've ported RetroArch to it as well. Let's just say that if Sony were to compare the PS3 SDK and PSL1GHT SDK, it would be impossible for the PSL1GHT devs to prove in court this could have been written without having obtained and looked at the PS3 SDK. Thus, it's still illegal - clean reverse engineering is not 'I looked at copyrighted SDK, changed around some function names and that's that - legal homebrew SDK' - clean reverse engineering is also not hooking into SPRX stub functions - it means 'from scratch, using zero copyrighted documentation/information'.

Something like bSNES is indeed 'clean reverse engineering' - PSL1GHT not so much.

You can check for yourself how much the two SDKs are alike by looking at my port code - I can get by targeting both the PS3 SDK and PSL1GHT by just changing around some macros -obviously, this is not 'coincidence' and it's fairly obvious what they modelled it after.

I was hoping the same thing. I don't really care about new games so much as I would like to play ps2 backups and get some better emulators. Internet radio would be nice.
Well I know 4 people who had done by themselves prior so its definitely possible

For now, this means nothing to the average cfw user.

Well for 1 it makes it easier to debug homebrew. Which in itself may draw more devs into the scene.
Can also take a good look at the TB eboots (remember Batman disc was done on a dex)

no wait,
a dex fw cant "mount" games, it might be able to launch MM but it doesent have the required lv1/lv2 patches to mount games afaik 3.55 dex does but higher still cant be patched afaik, so if iam right this is no way to pirate games (for now) you could play disc games i guess, dex let you go up and down to any fw
