Yes this conversion can be done by software but its high chances that you would brick your console so I wouldn't recommend going the cheap way out.

What I've asked on another thread but nobody answered is:

Is it possible to do this CEX->DEX convertion only with a flasher and from an official firmware?

If this is true, then users on series 3000 PS3s will be able to use homebrew and play backups (through BDEmulation) only by converting to DEX via flasher.

Is this possible or not?
