And you could downgrade via USB...
No the state that if a model is modable is due to the fact that the 3000+ models have hardware/software revisions that don't allow lower firmwares which are modable to be install on them (due to boot/met ldr having basically a higher firmware cap). To actually achieve the mod you need to have a ps3 with firmware version 3.55 or lower.

Added:
if you are on OFW 3.50 simply download 3.55 OFW from this site or from ps3devwiki. Then from there choose a MFW to install (which is based off of 3.55). Do not use the system update as you will go over 3.55 and you will have to either find another ps3 or get a flasher.

Ok, so correct me if I'm wrong, because I feel like I was originally misled upon investigating this matter. I was under the impression that if I got a model with a minimum FW lower than 3.55, I could use a USB to get to OFW 3.55 even if it was at the highest current OFW. Is that false? Can you only downgrade from OFW 3.56+ using a flasher of some sort?

OK to make this as clear as possible, Normally you cannot downgrade from any firmware above 3.55 with only a USB drive. If you are on a firmware that is above 3.55 you will need a flasher which will require clips or soldering. If you have a 3000 model you cannot downgrade to 3.55 do not attempt. The minver is only to check that which it states and that is to state the lowest firmware possible on the system. Just because you have a ps3 that can go as low as 1.0 does NOT mean you can downgrade with only a USB if you are above 3.55. Think of it this way, if under or on 3.55 you're good to go regardless of what ever model you are on. If you are above 3.55 then first you need to check what is the lowest possible firmware with minver. From there you use the flasher to downgrade.

AGAIN even if a PS3 can downgrade to 1.0 and you are on latest you are going to need a flasher.

Thanks @TizzyT for clearing that up. Hopefully that can answer questions for more folks than just me.
