I am not sure if I could link threads from other forums but this thread seems critical and important.

Many folks have experience brick when going back to CEX from DEX using mM flashing. There could be number of factors but reading from the thread, most experience brick after flashing CEX.bin using mM and can't boot to XMB.

This could be one of the factor:

1. The last FW they use before flashing CEX bin using mM or
2. The order of DEX/CEX CFW/OFW they use to perform system update or
3. Flash dump read/write from mM could be corrupted.

My Experience

It is strange. I started this thread. And now it my turn!

Here is my story on DEX to CEX conversion.

1. I was on 3.55 DEX CFW (Rogero)
2. I entered FSM using Preloader Advance.
3. I rename my Backuprflash.bin to rflash.bin
4. I used the files from step 11 of Captain X
5. The flashing went well.

Here is log:

Main: Version 3.1 
Main: Running main base!
Main: Opening config file...OK
Main: Analyzing configuration...
Restore rflash: Opening device for backup... Nand model. OK!
Restore rflash: Opening /dev_usb000/rflash.bin file backup...OK
Restore rflash: Dump size 256MB
Restore rflash: Starting full rflash restore ...COMPLETED!
Main: Shutdowning!

6. I turn on PS3, I did not exit factory mode
7. I try to Install 3.55 CEX CFW via XMB (Rogero-V3.4) // DO NOT DO IT BY THIS WAY! YOU HAVE TO DO IT VIA Lv2diag METHOD!
8. During installation. I had RSOD.
9. When ever I start/reboot, it will be at system update and RSOD in few sec. // I SHOULD HAVE PERFORMED A RE- UPDATE USING Lv2diag METHOD!

Here is where I have to kill myself.

10. I used this. // DO NOT USE THIS IF RUN INTO THIS SITUATION!

Before you switch back to CEX, you must be on 3.55DEX.

If you are on 4.** than downgrade with 3.55 DEX Downgrade PUP.

After downgrade , flash back your "my-original-cex.NORBIN" in mmOS .

Close Multiman.

ATTENTION: DONT TURN OF THE CONSOLE. BECAUSE IT WONT TURN ON AGAIN AND YOU WILL BRICK YOUR CONSOLE.

After closing Multiman install 3.55 CEX FW and your PS3 is RETAIL.

THIS METHOD IS CONFIRMED IN OTHER FORUM.

why even convert to dex if you are going to convert back to cex

That's not totally true.. as Ive said over there I CANNOT brick.. I keep trying everything that people are doing and simply can not manage to make my console brick.
I definitely turn my console off after flashing my original NOR..

As bleh said though, why go back?
Just choose something and stick to it unless you have a flasher then do whatever you want and feel safe

To confirm,

1. You must be on 3.55 DEX CFW
2. Flash back your "my-original-cex.NORBIN" or "my-original-cex.NANDBIN" in mmOS
3. Just exit mM. Do not Turn off PS3!.
4. Install 3.55 CEX CFW via XMB. [Always keep a 3.55 CEX CFW in your USB!]
5. Now you are on CEX.

We know that this sceneario could happen. Someone on DEX, trying to get back on CEX.
Even not bricking they took some serious time to convert their retail PS3 into a debug unit just to UNDO all they done to go RETAIL again...
Since day 0 and all the guides, tutorials, etc every single one explains that's it's not easy way out of DEX.

So why bother convert in first place?!?.

I have the same question - 'why go back?'. Just wait a few more days and you'll have everything your CEX firmware had.
