My PS3 is on 4.21, and I read that I need to buy a flasher.

I'm confused what exactly a flasher is.

I'm looking to purchase one of them, or maybe both, asap.

The first one is the flasher you need to downgrade. Here is some more info on it:

If the second isn't the flahser, what does it do?

The second one is a downgrade dongle. You need one of them as well to toggle factory service mode during the downgrade process.

It was used to downgrade and do other tasks back in firmware 3.41 and other earlier FWs iirc.

Did you get the e3 flasher with the esata station? You will need that as well, or some way to hook a hard drive to the unit because the flasher takes up the hard drive bay.

You will need a factory service mode dongle which is the e3 card reader or you will not be able to finish the downgrade process.
