Just like people still buy Wiis, just so they can hack them.
I'm not a business advisor or anything of the sort, but I'm fairly certain that would be BAD for business.

Well yeah, but how do you explain that the most hacked consoles in the history were the most succesfull ones? eg. PS1, PS2, Wii, Xbox 360.

So, are you still certain that a hacked console is bad for bussiness? I've never seen Sony complaining about the profits generated by PS1 and PS2. And those were pirated as hell!!

Could it not have been the fact that they were just good consoles that brought them their success?

Seriously, think about the negative press Sony would get.

"A year after PSN was hacked and brought offline for nearly a month, Sony gives into hackers and releases private keys to system."

WHO WOULD TRUST SONY AFTER THAT?

If game companys found out that sony was giving out the keys themselves, dont you think they would stop making games for them? Am pretty sure that a console with out any games is bad for business.

What would be the point in them spending millions on developing the next hot title to have sony enable it to be pirated.

Yes of course they were good consoles. But piracy is very important in the success of a console. Whole countries sales depends on that. It sounds a bit too much right? But it's true. Where I live everyone pirates. And if you ask them if they want a PS3 or an Xbox they will choose the Xbox because they can pirate on it. As simple as that. Now multiply that choice by a couple of millions...

And regarding Sony releasing the keys. They could do it anonymously and that would release them from any legal problem. You know, pretending to be a "mysterious hacker". That would atract press (eg "Sony PS3 hacked again") and thus raise console sales.

I can't explain exactly how it works. But it's like that. If all your friend bought a certain console, chances are that you'll buy the same console just to share with them your games, experiences or play online together. So it's like an exponential function that never stops getting bigger. Once people started buying a certain console, all the rest will follow. And piracy will influence that decision. At least in a lot of countries were piracy is everywhere. If in Europe and North America, where the most powerful countries in the world reside (and that have a high value currency), there's piracy, then imagine in the rest of the world like South America or Asia! I mean, there's LOTS of people willing to pirate.

Sorry, long post :P

Sooo.....PS1 and PS2 didn't have games right?

What about the Xbox 360? or the Wii? .....Yes....Those don't have games too!

Sony wont be soooo stupid to publicy tell everybody that they are favouring piracy by releasing the keys. They could do it anonymously by the name of "geohot4ever" for example! And nobody has to know it was them. Then they can pretend they are fighting piracy while counting the money of the rising console sales.

Sony should not release keys as they themselves would be in the same boat as 'the scene'(pissed off devs that don't release). Same note; they could release another console that is open, internet based, games paid by commercials(like TV used to be). They could call it the 'PS Free'

Take a look at the dev support that the PSP got.... Not all that much because it was one of the most hacked consoles ever.

System sales were good, games sales, not so much.

That's actually a great idea. Or maybe make the console per se much more expensive but provide free games during all it's life cycle.

And what can you tell me about the Nintendo DS? It was pretty much hacked too.

For $ony to just release the keys would be ridiculous. Every game developer under the sun would be angry with them. We now know the keys are already out there. What would best benefit the PS3 console is if the keys were "leaked" rather than just openly released. And when I say leaked I don't mean to just a few greedy devs.
