fans stuck on turbo, ylod
just got a phat console. complaint was , upon boot up fans kick in high then ylod. so i thought cool easy fix. bad paste right.(photos 1,2,3)
so i applied some artic silver.(photos 4&5) is that enough paste?( i have done many rrod repairs but that requires little paste. first ps3 repair) still fans kicked on high and ylod. did a little more inspection and on the usb hub i saw 2 points where solder was not flush with board.(photo6) would that be the issue? besides from what you see in the phots everything looked good except a lot of dirt build up. |

photo 6?
i see only 5 as for paste, thats only part of the problem. as with RROD the gpu needs reflow/reball. paste is not enough alone edit. as for the amount of paste, that is plenty

if you turn on the (fat) ps3 the fan always turn on high and then slow down to minimum.
so, the oven trick or heat gun trick or whatever is your only option.... or reballing. |

here is photo 6.
after a little more research i see that you can remove the rsx/cell heat sheilds. this is what i say under the rsx sheild(note i had already wiped half of it) can i remove the white adhesive? just put enough artic on the rsx chip to hold the heat sheild down? thinking this is why the fans kick on high? i aslo heard that the fans kick on high during a fan test with the eject held down for a certain amount of time. i am out of artic silver so i figure before wasting more money i would ask. going to reformat hdd to fat 32 and run chkdsk to see if hdd failure but i doubt it. would like to know what you guys think as this is my first ps3 reapir and thought i knew what i was doing. lol what else would kick the fans on high and 30 secs later ylod? all i can think of is heat.?.? ************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* dam that was quick. i hit power button, quit 1,2,3,4,5 pow fans on high for a sec, then ylod |

yes you can remove the old adhesive and replace the compound under the shield but you would be better served to fix the problem before putting it back together
paste is a preventative measure, not a cure to an existing problem also you may be better off putting some new epoxy at the corners to hold the heatshield in place after fixing it remembering to have even pressure on it while it cures otherwise there could be low contact in between gpu/plate causing even more problems while it is apart i see no reason why you cannot use a heatgun/oven reflow

Dude. You need to reflow it first to check if that is why its YLOD. Get a hairdryer (If you do not have a heatgun) and heat up the (CPU and GPU with the covers on) For about 5-10 Minutes. Let it cool for about 30-an hour. then re assemble it mostly and run it for a test. If its still YLOD then Heat it up again, then retry after cooling. If still YLOD check the Mainboard for broken capasiters. If everything seems normal then try a ReBall.

i have a heat gun, how hot, 350F? oven seems pretty extreme. worst case scenerio.
so the fans kicking on high is overheating? googled extensively but all fans issues are after repair. is there a reason why it would yelow, green then flash red? just curious, thanX in advance |
