Pretty much what I thought, but I haven't played PES to know it streams. Your idea makes perfect sense

No I don't have your problem because I made sure to buy a hard drive that doesn't have a spindown function or to buy one where it can be disabled.

Your problem lies entirely with the hard drive itself, the adapter will not be causing the problem.

I'm very familiar with this problem though because it's a problem on the Wii also when loading ISOs from an external hard drive and there is a list on gbatemp of hard drives that will\will not work because of spindown problem.

Generally speaking Western Digital hard drives are the worst for it, an Hitachi or Samsung will be fine and can definately get it disabled in the manufacturers DOS based hard drive utility if needs be I'm only talking about 3.5 inch hard drives here.

If you have a 2.5 inch external drive then it's very hard to even find a high capacity one above 500GB that won't exhibit a spindown problem. gbatemp will help you with that.

"gbatemp wii compatibility hard drive list"

That's assuming it is a spindown problem sounds much more likely than not.

A sure fire test is to load a game, pause it, go away for an hour, then unpause keeping your ear close to the external hard drive continue to a point where new data is loaded, if you hear it spin up - it's defo your problem. Bare in mind though that this might still not cause a crasj, I suppose you could also tell just by putting your hands on the external drive as all external drives have a slight vibration\rumble when they are spinning (obviously need to have had no activity for an 20-60 mins or so to see if this is happening)

What is the manufacturer and model of your external hard drive please?

spindown is a power saving feature on a hard drive where if it isn't accessed for a period of time it spins down. It then spins up when data is requested again. The problem is it works fine in an environment where it is expected like windows\mac\linux as the OS is designed with it in mind. The PS3 is not designed with it in mind and thus the crash to XMB.

Only resolution is...

1. loading hard drive manufacturers low level utility (the one that can change power management, SATA level, type settings) and seeing if a setting is available in there. These tools write to the hard drive's ROM and setting stays permanent.
2. change hard drive.

Anyways give the details on the drive and I'll post a link to the utility you need, it's normally quite easy to check if it can be changed in software as the utility will be a bootable iso image you burn to a CD and boot with on your computer.

Most manufacturers have tools to delay spindown timer, turn off spin down altogether.

I'm surprised there isnt a generic tool, it would be totally useful

I'm having the same issue with Assassins Creed: Revelations. I've played through Max Payne 3 to the end without this happening. I also suspect it's nothing to do with the HDD as it happened on 3.55 DEX multiman which runs off the internal HDD (!)

My external is the original internal HDD of the 160gb slim, the ML1665GSX from Toshiba.

I've also enabled the debug option "Disable ExitGame Timeout" to see if that was causing the issue.

There was no rule broken here @hellsing9 , the poster said he downloaded the game, he did not post links, he did not even say where the downloads came from, he simply sad he downloaded them and that is not against the rule's.

@Hadi_Only use the infraction appeal system to appeal the infraction, as it is the most f*cking retarded infraction I have seen given yet.
